Record-Setting Day Highlights 20-5 Victory for Tribe

Box Score

Martin, Tenn. (May 4, 2003) - Brian Hopkins had a school record six hits and three homers to go with eight RBI and Denver Stuckey had five hits en route to hitting for the cycle as the Southeast Missouri State baseball team defeated the Skyhawks of Tennessee-Martin today, 20-5. Southeast moves to 25-15, and 9-5 in the OVC, while the Hawks fall to 14-25-1, 3-10-1 in the conference.

With bad weather looming, the Indians knew they needed to jump all over the Skyhawks and take an early lead. That's just what the Tribe did as they scored 16 runs over the first four innings. Southeast would score four more as the Hawks put four more on the board, as well making the final score 20-5.

Hopkins had a monster, record-setting day. He was 6-7, with four runs scored and eight RBI. He had three homers, one shy of the single-game record, and a double. His eight RBI was also one shy of the single-game record. For the week the left fielder hit .684 (13-19), with three doubles, five homers and 13 RBI. He racked up 31 total bases, while slugging 1.632. His 7 at bats tied a single-game record. He also extended his hitting streak to 17 games.

It would take a massive performance from Hopkins to overshadow Stuckey's day at the plate. The senior third baseman was 5-7 on the day tying his own record for at bats in a contest. He had a single, double, a triple and two homers on the day for his first career cycle. He had five RBI and five runs scored.

Justin Christian was 3-5 with three RBI and two runs scored, while Zach Borowiak had a 2-5 day with two runs scored and driven in. The double was his 16th of the season and 65th of his career, tying the career record with fellow Indian star Jeremy Johnson.

The Tribe had eight homers on the day. They had three from Hopkins, two from Stuckey, and one each from Christian, Borowiak, and Moulton. They also had six double on the afternoon for 15 extra-base hits.

Ryan Forsyth started for the Tribe and pitched six beautiful innings, striking out five and allowing just one earned run on five hits. Stan Skakalski, Brad Bumpus and Korey Klein combined for the final three innings.

Southeast now moves their OVC record to 9-5, just one game behind league-leading Tennessee Tech who swept Eastern Kentucky this weekend to move to 10-4. Austin Peay is 9-4-1 with their sweep of Eastern Illinois. Murray State is 8-6, and Eastern Kentucky is 6-8. Eastern Illinois, Morehead State and Tennessee-Martin are 6th, 7th and 8th in the league.

Southeast now will finish off their 11-game road swing with two games in Springfield as they take on Southwest Missouri on Tuesday and Wednesday this week. They then will come home for their final home series of the season and take on the Eagles of Morehead State this Saturday and Sun
