Southeast Sweeps Double-Header As Records Fall
Cape Girardeau, Mo. (May 10, 2003) - Behind 34 runs and 34 hits, the Southeast Missouri State Indians swept a double-header from the Eagles of Morehead State today by the scores of 11-4 and 22-8. Southeast moves to 27-17 and 11-5 in the conference as Morehead falls to 14-29 and 5-12 in the league. The Tribe started out hot as they got four runs over the first two innings. Denver Stuckey doubled to start the game and was driven home when Brian Hopkins hit his 17th homer of the season. Southeast got another longball from Justin Christian in the inning making the score 3-0. It was 4-1 after three and a half, before Southeast scored again. Dave Lawson homered to start the inning. Gilbert singled behind him to start a three run rally in the inning that saw Hopkins pick up his third RBI of the game, and another run scored in the inning bringing the tally to 7-1 Southeast. Starter Bill Clayton was on cruise control. He pitched the first seven innings, allowing just four earned runs and striking out three. He gave way to Jim Beever in the eighth who pitched a perfect final two innings, striking out two. Clayton picked up his fourth win in a row and moves his record to 4-2. Hopkins was 3-5 on the contest with four RBI and two runs scored. Lawson and Christian each had two RBI, as Lawson had three hits on the day. Stuckey was 2-3 with two runs scored, but had two stolen bases to tie him with Kerry Robinson for the school record in career stolen bases. After giving up two runs to the Eagles in the first inning of game two, the Tribe got right back on track. Stuckey started things off by singling to right field and then stole second, putting himself all alone as the all-time stolen base king at Southeast. After a walk to Hopkins and a fly out by Christian, Borowiak doubled right field giving him 66 career doubles, and putting him atop that category all-time at Southeast. Southeast would get five more runs over the next two innings, before they exploded for 11 in the fourth. Christian and Borowiak homered to start the inning. The Tribe would send 17 batters to the plate and bang out eight hits and get walked three times, as well as have one batter hit. They left three on base. The Tribe got three more runs in the fifth as Borowiak hit a towering three-run homer to left field, driving in Hopkins and Wade Hansford. Starter Tim Alvarez probably had his worse outing of the year, going five innings, allowing eight earned runs, and striking out three. He, however, got his 12th win of the season, tying him with Brandon Smith, Brad Purcell, and Todd Pennington for the most wins ever in a season at Southeast. Borowiak had a monster game at the plate. He was 4-4 with four runs scored and six RBI. Seth Moulton had three RBI with two hits and three runs scored as Christian scored three times too. Southeast and Morehead will be back in action tomorrow as they hook up for game three of the series at 1 p.m. at Capaha Field. |
