High Octane Offense Propels Redhawks to Victory
May 13, 2008
CAPE GIRARDEAU, Mo. - Six Redhawks turned in multiple-hit performances Tuesday as the Southeast Missouri State University baseball team steamrolled Central Arkansas 12-4. Nick Harris and Tyrell Cummings both collected three hits, leading Southeast to 16 total, just one shy of a season high. The 16 base hits for the Redhawks (22-21) was the most since April 22 when they tallied 17 at Arkansas State. Jim Klocke, Matt Wulfers, Trenton Moses and Zac Blemker each turned in a pair of hits. Central Arkansas (24-26-1) scored the game's first run in the top of the first inning, but the unrelenting Southeast offense quickly claimed the lead in the bottom of the frame and never looked back. Klocke doubled into the right field corner to bring Harris, who singled with one out, all the way around from first base. With the game tied at one, Cummings followed with a two-out single to right to give the Redhawks the only lead they would need all game. Southeast plated three more runs in the second inning, two of which came on Klocke's first career triple. After two quick outs in the inning, Blemker and Tony Spencer laced back-to-back singles, and Harris came through with an RBI single to center. Klocke stepped up and drove a triple up the right field line that scored both runners, giving the Redhawks a 5-1 lead. With a comfortable lead after two frames, Southeast starter Josh Syberg kept the Redhawks ahead through three innings on the mound, allowing just two runs, on of which was unearned. After allowing a walk and a single to the first two batters in the fourth, Josh Manning entered the contest and immediately ended the Bears' threat, eventually forcing reserve centerfielder Scott Cline to ground into an inning-ending double play. The Bears scored a run in the third, and they would score single runs again in the fifth and seventh, but the Southeast lineup kept them comfortably in the lead. Cummings homered in the third inning, his 11th of the season, and the Redhawks posted three runs in the sixth. Cummings drove in another run that inning on a sacrifice fly, his third RBI of the game. Moses also drove a run across the plate in the sixth with a double to center that scored Wulfers from second base. Klocke also drove in three RBIs on the day. The Redhawks scored three more runs before the game was over, marking the third consecutive game against Central Arkansas that Southeast has scored in double digits. In a two-game series at Central Arkansas last season, the Redhawks scored 12 and 11 runs as they split the series with the Bears. Manning collected his second victory of the season with three and one-third innings of relief, allowing just one hit and two runs. Dustin Renfrow added two-thirds of an inning of relief, while Ryan Poole and Sam Rosener both threw one scoreless frame. The Bears used six pitchers, while left-handed starter James Boone received his first loss of the season. He allowed six runs on eight hits in two innings of work. |
