Alvarez And Indians Shut Down Hogs of Arkansas Team posts win No. 29, looks for 30 tomorrow
Fayetteville, Ark. (May 14, 2002) - The Southeast Missouri State baseball team got an impressive win today from junior pitcher Tim Alvarez as he limited the Razorbacks of the University of Arkansas to three hits and one run in a nine-inning complete game 5-1 victory. Alvarez struck out seven hitters, while walking just three, but scattered five hit batsmen over the nine innings proving he could be effectively wild. Junior left fielder Brian Hopkins went 3-4 on the day with one run scored. Junior DH David Lawson went 2-3 with two RBI's and two runs scored. Junior catcher Tristen McDonald and junior third baseman Denver Stuckey each had two hits for the Tribe. Southeast got the scoring started in the first as Stuckey singled to start the game. He advanced to second on a Clemente Bonilla ground out, and was moved to third when junior shortstop Zach Borowiak grounded out. Senior centerfielder Vern Hatton swung at strike three but the ball moved past the pitcher and Hatton advanced to first, while Stuckey scored the first run of the game. Hopkins started the second inning off with a single through the left side. That brought about a wild play. Lawson squared to sacrifice Hopkins, but the first baseman threw the ball into right field allowing Hopkins to score. The right fielder then tried to throw in behind Lawson at second, but threw the ball up the left field line moving Lawson to third. Freshman first baseman Eric Hoffman then hit a deep fly to center to sacrifice in Lawson. Bonilla started the third with a double down the right field line and was sacrificed over by Borowiak. Hatton then hit a deep fly to right to sacrifice him in. Lawson started off the fourth inning with a deep single to the hole at short, and was sacrificed over on a bunt from Hoffman. Sophomore right fielder Brice Nicholas grounded out to first advancing Lawson to third and Stuckey singled up the middle to drive in Lawson and the fifth run. Alvarez was cruising throughout the game. Although he had walked three batters and hit four, he still had a no-hitter through six, when right fielder Ryan Fox doubled to start the inning. Alvarez hit his fifth batter of the game in dh Aaron Graves, and then a fly out to center by first basemen Brett Hagedorn moved Fox to third. The play of the game was next as second baseman Luke Weatherford doubled to left center, but an immaculate throw into Borowiak and a spectacular relay to McDonald cut down Graves at the plate to end the inning. Fox scored on the play for the only Hog run for the day. Alvarez finished off the Hogs for the complete game victory, his second nine inning variety. He moved his record to 5-1 and lowered his ERA to 3.00. The two teams will be back at it again from Baum Stadium tomorrow. First pitch is slated for 5 p.m. The Tribe will then travel to Morehead State this weekend to finish off the regular season. |
