Redhawks Sweep Series Against Golden Eagles

May 15, 2005

Box Score

COOKEVILLE, Tenn. - (Sunday, May 15, 2005) The Redhawks continued their offensive onslaught as they completed their sweep of Tennessee Tech Sunday afternoon at Bush Stadium in Cookeville, Tennessee. The Redhawks completed the last two innings of game two after being postponed yesterday winning 10-1 before winning the finale 16-12.

The Redhawks (21-28, 12-12 OVC) won their season-high fourth game of the season and now have won five of their last six. The sweep was their second-straight Ohio Valley Conference series win and their third series win of the season. It was also their third series sweep of the season.

The Redhawks have found their offense at the right time as they have scored 10 or more runs in four-straight games.

Holding a 4-1 lead after five innings yesterday Jamie McAlister continued his masterful pitching performance from the following day as he came back to pitch one perfect inning before giving away to Andrew Johnson to complete the game.

McAlister pitched six innings allowing one run on three hits while striking out three for his third win of the season.

The night did little to cool off the Redhawks hot bats as they started the day scoring five runs in the sixth inning. Jordan Payne tripled to lead off the inning and scored on a pass ball by pitcher Matthew Edwards. Bo Jenkins walked and Eric Horstman was hit by pitch. Brady Noll loaded the bases with a bunt single. Jenkins scored on an error by the shortstop as he attempted to throw out Frank Montiel at first. Freddy Lopez then singled to plate Horstman. Brent Lawson followed with a double down the leftfield line to drive in both Montiel and Noll.

In the seventh the Redhawks scored their tenth run of the game when Horstman scored on a Lopez single.

Lopez went 4-5 with a season-high five RBI to lead the Redhawks offensively.

Keith Wollis went 2-2 with his first career triple and Horstman scored four runs.

Jamie McAlister allowed only one run on three hits in the Redhawks 10-1 win

The series finale proved to be a closer game but the Redhawks used a 10-run fifth inning to secure the sweep. The 10 runs are the most runs scored by the Redhawks this season and the most since the Redhawks scored 11-runs against Murray State on March 27, 2004.

Tennessee Tech (12-39, 5-18 OVC) struck first with two runs in the first inning off Redhawks starter Derek Herbig.

The Redhawks pulled ahead with three runs in the third inning Payne led off with a single to center and advanced to second on a Jenkins grounder. Horstman walked and both runners came around to score on Noll's triple to leftfield. Noll then scored on Montiel's sacrifice fly to make it 3-2.

The Golden Eagles scored three runs apiece in the third and fourth to jump ahead 8-3.

Payne would key the Redhawks 10-run fifth inning as he led-off with a double down the leftfield line. Jenkins singled to plate Payne. Horstman singled and Noll was hit by a pitch to load the bases. A wild pitch by Justin Fields scored Jenkins. Fields then walked Montiel to load the bases again. Lopez singled to plate Horstman and keep the bases packed. Noll scored on a RBI groundout by Lawson for the first out of the inning. Monteil then scored on a sacrifice fly by Conner Wollis. Pinch hitter Ernie Bracamonte was hit by a pitch and gave away to pinch runner Chris Gibson who stole his sixth base of the season.

Payne made his second appearance at the plate in the inning and walked to load the bases again. Lopez would score on a passed ball to score the Redhawks sixth run of the inning. Jenkins then walked to load the bases again. Horstman then doubled to left center to plate Payne and Gibson. Noll then singled to drive in Jenkins and Horstman for runs nine and ten.

The Redhawks scored the ten runs on seven hits and one error as 14 Redhawks batted.

The Golden Eagles then scored a run in the fifth to cut the Redhawks lead to 13-9.

In the seventh the Redhawks added three more runs when Payne reached for the third time to lead-off an inning on a throwing error by the pitcher. With Payne at third due to the error, Jenkins doubled to left to score him. Horstman then doubled to right to plate Jenkins. Noll then collected his third hit of the season when he singled to move Horstman to third. Montiel then singled to plate Horstman to make it 16-9.

The Golden Eagles refused to go away as they scored three runs in the final inning before Lawson came in to strikeout Britt Clubb with two runners on to end the game.

Five Redhawks recorded multi-hit games with Horstman and Noll each going 3-4. Noll collected a season-high four RBIs and scored two runs.
