Baseball Sweeps Double-Header, Takes No. 2 Seed
Murray, Ky. (May 17, 2003) - Strong pitching led the Tribe to a double-header sweep today of the Thoroughbreds of Murray State in Murray. Coupled with Austin Peay defeating Tennessee Tech for the OVC Title, Southeast claimed the No. 2 seed in the OVC Tournament next week, drawing No. 5 seed, Eastern Kentucky. Southeast (30-18, 14-6 OVC) never trailed in either of the games today. The Tribe got on top first in game one as back-to-back doubles from Brian Hopkins and Zach Borowiak gave the Indians an early lead. Murray (20-28, 9-11 OVC) answered back with a run in the first, but a two-run shot from Gary Gilbert gave the Tribe the lead back. After another Murray run, Southeast answered back with four in the fifth. Aaron Fangman singled down the left field line and stole second. With two outs, Gilbert singled to center scoring Fangman. Hopkins then tripled to right center scoring Gilbert and Borowiak homered to deep left driving in two, as the Tribe went on top, 7-2. Murray would get two more as Southeast scored three in the seventh, cruising to the 10-4 win. Gilbert was 2-3 with three runs scored and three RBI. Borowiak drove in four on three hits and scored once. Ryan Forsyth started for the Tribe and pitched five innings, allowing two earned runs as Jim Beever finished up the final two. Game two was all about starting pitching as Indians starter Stan Skakalski was on his game. He pitched six scoreless innings as the 'Breds could only muster two hits off the lefty. Both teams went scoreless in the first three innings, but a triple to right center by Justin Christian in the fourth started a scoring rally for the Tribe. The Indians scored two more in that inning, one in the fifth, and got one when Borowiak homered for the second time on the day in the sixth. Christian would also score in the inning on a wild pitch. Southeast got one more in the seventh, as they cruised to the 6-0 win. Gary Gilbert pitched a perfect seventh to end the game for the Tribe as he also had an RBI at the plate. Borowiak, Christian, McDonald and Seth Moulton each had RBI's for the Indians as Southeast finished the regular season with 30 wins and is the fourth season in a row, fifth in six years, the team has won 30 games. The Tribe will now move to Paducah as they will be the No. 2 seed in the OVC Tournament. Austin Peay won two of three from Tennessee Tech this weekend to claim the league's regular season crown. Tech will be the No. 3 seed and will face the No. 4 seed Murray State at 7 p.m. on Wednesday. Peay will face off with No. 6 Eastern Illinois at 3 p.m. and Southeast will face No. 5 Eastern Kentucky at 11 a.m. as the Tournament's opening game. |
