Redhawks Fall to In-State Rival Bears, 10-2
May 17, 2005
SPRINGFIELD, Mo. - (Tuesday, May 17, 2005) The Southeast Missouri State Redhawks baseball team saw their four-game winning streak snapped against in-state rival Southwest Missouri State 10-2 in non-conference action at Hammons Field Tuesday evening. The Redhawks (21-29) also saw their streak of consecutive games of scoring in double-digits snapped at four games as the Bears (22-29) used five different pitchers to shutdown the recently awoken Redhawks bats. Meanwhile the Bears feasted on the pitching of freshman Casey Johnson who gave up all ten runs on 11 hits in 5.1 innings of work. The Bears attacked early with three runs in the bottom of the first, two runs were courtesy of a Chris Taylor homerun over the leftfield fence. That set the tone as the Bears would score a run in the third, two in the fourth and four in the sixth inning to knock Johnson from the game. The four runs in the sixth all came courtesy of the long ball as Kirk McConnell and Tim Rafferty each hit two-run blasts. The Redhawks avoided the shutout in their half of the sixth when Jordan Payne singled to lead-off the inning. He moved to third on a single by Levi Olson and would later score on a wild pitch by Paul Marsala. In the eighth the Redhawks would score another run as sophomore Brent Lawson led-off the inning with a solo shot over the leftfield fence for his fourth homerun of the season to tie him for the team lead.
Johnson (1-6) received the loss as Chris Mackey picked up his first win of the season for the Bears throwing three innings of shutout ball before the Bears pulled him for one of their four relievers used on the night. Redhawks pitchers Josh Parham and Matt Carter each combined to throw 2.2 innings of perfect ball to slow down the Bears offensive assault. Payne continued his hot hitting as he went 3-4 with a double and a run scored. Over his last five games he is 14-23 for a .608 batting average. Eric Horstman collected his team-high 20th multi-hit game of the season with a 2-5 night. He also extended his current hitting streak to a career-high 20 games and in the process kept his streak of reaching safely alive at 42 games which is the nation's longest active streak. The Redhawks will look for the split tomorrow against the Bears when they take the field at noon for the series finale at Hammons Field. Senior Bill Clayton is slated to make his first start in over a year for the Redhawks. The game can be heard live on 1220 KGIR or at GoSoutheast.com. |
