Redhawks Drop 11-6 Contest to Bears

May 18, 2005

Box Score

SPRINGFIELD, Mo. - (Wednesday, May 18, 2005) The Southeast Missouri State baseball team suffered a 11-6 loss to in-state rival Southwest Missouri State in a non-conference contest at Hammons Field Wednesday afternoon. The loss gave the Bears they series sweep as the won both games of the two-game series and extended their winning streak to eight games.

For the third-straight game the Redhawks (21-30) gave up double-digit runs to their opponents as the Bears (23-29) scored in every inning but the eighth as they hammered out 11 runs on 14 hits against the Redhawks pitchers.

Redhawks starter Bill Clayton (0-2) made his first starting appearance since March 12, 2004 and struggled as he lasted only 1.2 innings allowing six runs on four hits.

The Redhawks gave him support as they scored two runs in the first inning courtesy of a Freddy Lopez two-run shot to the opposite field. Brady Noll, who singled in the inning, scored on Lopez' fifth homerun of the season.

The Bears answered with three runs in their half of the first and never relinquished the lead as they added three runs in the second on a Kirk McConnell three-run blast, his second homerun in as many days and then scored single runs in the following five innings.

The Redhawks left nine runners on base and squandered a couple of bases-loaded and less than one out opportunities.

In the fourth the Redhawks had the bases loaded with no outs but managed to score only one run on a fielder's choice by Chris Gibson to plate Brent Lawson.

Lawson again feasted on the Bears pitching as he went 3-5 with a double and a three-run homerun in the top of the ninth. His homerun was his second in as many days and tied him with Lopez for the team-lead.

Lawson was also the only player to shutdown the Bears bats as he made his 15th appearance on the mound this season in the eighth inning holding them hitless and scoreless.

Frank Montiel showed signs of breaking out of a recent slump as he went 2-5 with a run scored.

Eric Horstman kept all three of his streak alive with a 1-4 day. He extended his career-high hitting streak to 21 games and now has reached safely in 43-straight games. He also started his 107th-straight game.

Jacob Hilgendorf led four Bears who collected multi-hit games. Hilgendorf went 3-4 with a homerun and two RBI.

Scott Nasby also went 3-4 for the Bears with two runs scored.

Jake Shafer collected his first win of the season going seven innings allowing three runs on seven hits while striking out a career-high 10 Redhawks.

The Redhawks return home to face Ohio Valley Conference rival Tennessee-Martin in a pivotal match-up as the Redhawks will conclude the 2005 regular season with a doubleheader on Friday, May 20 and the series finale on Saturday, May 21. Both games will start at 1:00 p.m. Friday Health Facilities Rehab will hand out free hot dogs and soda between the games of the doubleheader. Saturday will be Senior day as the Redhawks honor 10 senior members of the Redhawks before the game.
