Alvarez Tosses First-Ever OVC Tournament No-Hitter

Box Score

Paducah, Ky. (May 22, 2003) - Ohio Valley Conference Pitcher of the Year Tim Alvarez pitched the first no-hitter in OVC tournament history to lead Southeast Missouri State past top seeded Austin Peay, 4-0, in an elimination game today.

Alvarez, 14-3, walked four batters and hit two, but was in complete control the entire game with only two batters reaching second base. Southeast, 31-19, took the lead for good in the second inning when Zach Borowiak, who had singled and advanced to third on a single by Justin Christian, scored on a ground out by Tristen McDonald.

The second seeded Indians, who will play again in the losers bracket on Friday, added a run in the fourth and two more in the fifth to give Alvarez the run support he needed.

Alvarez struck out nine batters and walked only four en-route to his school record 14th win. Peay pitcher Dustin Smith scattered 10 hits over eight innings as he pitched the entire game for the Govs.

Denver Stuckey, David Lawson and Gary Gilbert each had two hits as all had an RBI.

The Tribe will play at either 11 a.m. or 3 p.m. tomorrow depending on the outcome of the Eastern Illinois - Tennessee Tech game today. Southeast head coach Mark Hogan was elated in the post game interview and was extremely proud of Alvarez and the rest of the team.

"It was the most amazing performance I've ever witnessed," said Southeast coach Mark Hogan "It was a clutch performance in a must-win situation. He just signed, sealed and delivered his All-American Trophy.

"Our fielders were nearly perfect today with the only blemish being a catcher's interference and there were countless amazing plays out there that helped Tim to this feat."
