Gray Outslugs Black in Game 1 of Fall Series, 20-5

CAPE GIRARDEAU, Mo. - Led by two 7-run innings, the gray team defeated the black squad, 20-5, in Game 1 of the Steak & Beans World Series Friday night. Gray registered 16 hits, including seven that went for extra bases. Kenton Parmley led the way with three doubles and five RBIs while Kyle Gumieny earned the victory with four innings of 1-run relief.

Both teams got off to a hot start offensively, scoring three runs apiece in the first inning.

Black pulled ahead with one run in the fourth, but the lead would not last long as they gray batters put together a 7-run bottom of the fourth. The gray team never looked back as they added three runs in the bottom of the seventh and put together another 7-run frame in the eighth.

Parmley led the offensive attack with three run-scoring doubles totaling five RBIs. Andrew Wiese also registered three hits, including a 3-run home run and RBI double. Louie Haseltine and Jesse Tierney also finished with three hits and multiple-RBI performances. Nick Harris scored a game-high four runs from the leadoff spot.

Gumieny (1-0) entered the game in the top of the fourth and threw four innings, allowing only one earned run while scattering six hits. He held the black unit scoreless for his final three innings and finished with two strikeouts while not issuing a walk.

Josh Syberg started for the gray team and also gave up six hits and one earned run over his three innings of work.

The black team registered 13 hits but was unable to put together a rally to match the gray offensive outburst. Jim Klocke was a perfect 5-for-5 with three doubles, one RBI and one run scored. Tony Spencer went 3-for-4 with a triple and a run. Blake Dirnberger notched two hits in the defeat.

Greg Hendrix (0-1) made the start for black, going three and one-third innings, yielding four hits and five earned runs. He recorded a game-high four strikeouts and walked three.

The teams will return to the diamond for Game 2 Saturday. First pitch is slated for 12-noon at Capaha Field.
