Gray Team Takes Game 5, Wins Steak & Beans World Series

By Tyler Koonce, Sports Information Assistant CAPE GIRARDEAU, Mo. - Propelled by a 4-run second inning, the gray team claimed a 5-2 victory in the fifth and final game of the Steak & Beans World Series Wednesday. Five different players drove in runs for the gray squad and starting pitcher Corey Harness allowed only one unearned run over five innings of work. Louie Haseltine led off the bottom of the second with a single through the right side of the infield. He moved to second on a sacrifice bunt by Jesse Tierney and came around to score the first run of the game on an RBI double by Trenton Moses to right-center. Andrew Wiese followed with a run-scoring single to left-center then proceeded to steal second base. After Wiese moved to third on a groundout, Nick Harris drove an RBI triple to the base of the wall in right-center. Harris rounded out the scoring on an infield single by Kenton Parmley. Haseltine led off the next inning with a walk and scored from first base when Tierney hit an RBI double down the right field line. Black got on the board in the top of the fourth when Blake Dirnberger drew a walk, moved to second on an error and then came around to score on the second error of the inning. It was the only run allowed by Harness. In the seventh and final inning of the game, Tyrell Cummings singled for the black team and then stole second base. Dirnberger hit a two-out single to right field, allowing Cummings to cross the plate. James Leigh retired the two of the final three batters of the game to earn the save for the gray squad. Harness (1-2) gave up five hits, struck out three and issued five walks to earn the win. Ryan Poole threw one and one-third innings of middle relief, allowing one hit and one run. He also struck out one opposing hitter. Leigh notched a strikeout and drew a flyout to end the game. John Salazar (0-2) took the loss for the black team, allowing five hits and four earned runs over one and two-thirds innings. Brad LaBruyere threw two and two-thirds innings of relief, yielding just one hit and one run to go along with two strikeouts. Greg Hendrix and Jim Klocke held gray hitless over the final one and two-thirds innings. Kody Campbell went 3-for-4 with a double for the black team. Dirnberger reached base in all four plate appearances with two singles and two walks. Jim Klocke led all hitters with a .500 batting average (9-for-18) during the series. He hit four doubles and drew four walks. Haseltine led gray hitters with a .450 average (9-for-20), including a home run, double and six RBIs. Todd Strahlendorf led all pitchers in the series, throwing 10 innings without allowing a run. Leigh gave up only two earned runs in nine innings of work. Southeast will release its 2009 baseball schedule as soon as it is finalized. |
