Matt Wagner Named OVC Player of the Week

CAPE GIRARDEAU, Mo. - (Feb. 19, 2007) Sophomore first baseman Matt Wagner has been named the first OVC Player of the Week for the 2007 baseball season. He recorded at least one hit in each game of the three-game series at Jackson State last weekend and recorded five runs batted in.

Wagner (Wahoo, Neb./Nebraska) hit .385 (5-for-13) on the weekend with two doubles, one home run, three runs scored and five RBIs as Southeast (2-1) won the series from the Tigers, two games to one. He did not strike out in any of his at bats.

The left-handed batter began his career as a Redhawk with a two-run double in his second at bat. He recorded a second double in his next at bat and finished game one of the Saturday doubleheader 3-for-5 at the plate with two runs scored and two RBIs.

In game two of the doubleheader, he drove in the first run of the game to with a single to break a 0-0 tie in the fifth inning. He later came around to score the only other run in the 2-0 victory for the Redhawks.

On Sunday, Wagner hit Southeast's first home run of the season in the first inning. The two-run blast over the right-center field wall gave Southeast an early 2-0 lead.

Wagner and the Redhawks will return to action in their home opener on Friday, Feb. 23 at 2 p.m. against the South Dakota State Jackrabbits. The Jackrabbits (3-3) will be in town for a three game series with games on Saturday and Sunday that begin at 1 p.m.
