Tribe Travels to SIU
March 22, 2004 CAPE GIRARDEAU, MO -
After its most successful week of the season thus far, the Southeast Missouri State baseball team heads to Carbondale, Ill., to take on the Salukis (3-13) of SIU. The Tribe enters Tuesday's matchup with the Salukis having won four of its last five. After sweeping Central Michigan on March 17, the Indians took the first two games against Southwest Missouri State this past Friday and Saturday. Southeast won the first game 5-2. Ryan Forsyth found out just minutes before the game that he would be starting and went on to throw into the seventh inning and gave up no runs along the way to earn his first win of the seaon. In Saturday's matchup with SMS, Gary Gilbert hit a third-inning grand slam to lead Southeast to a 8-2 win over the Bears. Junior right hander Anthonly Maupin earned a complete game win in the victory, allowing just one earned run and striking out seven SMS batters. Gilbert and Maupin each won Ohio Valley Conference honors yesterday for their efforts last week. Gilbert, who leads the Indians with a dozen RBI, earned OVC Player of the Week, as he hit .357 with a pair of home runs and eight RBI. Maupin took OVC Pitcher of the Week honors, as he earned the win on Saturday after helping bring home a win on Wednesday night with an inning and two-thirds of hitless/scoreless ball out of the bullpen. Maupin currently leads the OVC with two complete games, is third in opponent's batting average, and ninth in the OVC in ERA. Today, Southeast is expected to throw senior left hander Stan Skakalski. Skakalski pitched on Wednesday and earned his first victory of the season against the Central Michigan Chippewas in a 7-5 victory. He went six innings and gave up four runs while striking out five. |
