Baseball Begins OVC Play
March 26, 2004 Cape Girardeau, Mo. -
The Southeast Missouri State Indians open up Ohio Valley Conference play this weekend as they host the Racers of Murray State for a three-game weekend series. The last time the two teams met was last year in the OVC tournament. The Racers, who finished fourth in the league knocked out the second-seeded Indians on 5/23/03. The all-time series record between the teams is 28-28. Scouting Southeast...After having won a season-high four games in a row, Southeast has since dropped three in a row. The Tribe lost 6-3 on Wednesday night to the University of Missouri. The Tigers are currently ranked No. 26 in the nation by the National Collegiate Baseball Writers of America. Senior Gary Gilbert and junior Bryan Kurt are both on eight-game hitting streaks coming into the weekend. Gilbert has raised his batting average to .281 on the season, and boasts a team-leading 13 RBI. Kurt is second on the team in runs driven in and tops among the Southeast batters with a .420 average. On Wednesday, against Mizzou, Kurt drove in a pair of runs while going 2-for-5 on the night. He's now batting .474 with runners in scoring position. Southeast is 7-2 this year at Capaha Field. Southeast is hitting .306 in home game this year, while holding its opponents to just a .234 batting average. The Tribe has outscored its opponent 53-27. Scouting Murray State...The Racers come into this weekend's action on a three game winnings streak. Murray swept Arkansas-Little Rock on Sunday, and topped Western Kentucky on Wednesday. The Racers got off to a slow start this season as they lost 10 of their first 11 games. Murray comes into the weekend with a .227 team batting average. Clint Griggs leads the way for Murray with a .293 batting average. Geoff Kirksey is second on the squad with a .266 average, and leads the team with three home runs and 13 RBI. |
