Redhawks Seek Revenge Against Arkansas State

CAPE GIRARDEAU, Mo.- (Monday, April 18, 2005) Southeast Missouri will be on the road Tuesday for a non-conference game against the Arkansas State Indians in Jonesboro, Arkansas. The first pitch is scheduled for 6:30 p.m. at Tomlinson Stadium. On March 29th the Indians defeated Southeast by a score of 9-0 at Capaha Field. Southeast leads the all-time series 20-17. Scouting Southeast The Redhawks are coming off a weekend series against conference rival Austin Peay. The Redhawks (13-21, 4-8 OVC) lone win of the series came in the first game as the Redhawks defeated Austin Peay, 6-4. Austin Peay used a walk-off home run to win game two, 5-3. In game three the Austin Peay pitching staff held Southeast to a pair of runs as the Redhawks were defeated, 11-2. Frank Montiel went 2-4 last time against Arkansas State. In the weekend series against Austin Peay, Montiel went 4-11 with two runs scored. Montiel leads the team with a .344 average, 11 doubles, 26 RBIs and a .477 slugging percentage. In conference play Montiel is hitting .289, with six runs scored and nine RBIs. Derek Herbig evened his record after picking up a 6-4 win against Austin Peay. Herbig (2-2) went 6 1/3 innings allowing four runs on eight hits while striking out four Austin Peay batters. In 10 starts Herbig has a 4.31 ERA with 38 strikeouts in 48 innings pitched. Ernie Bracamonte is hitting .328, with 17 RBIs and 3 home runs on the season. In conference play Bracamonte is hitting .413, with six RBIs and four doubles. Jordan Payne went 4-13 with 3 runs scored against Austin Peay. Payne is hitting .227, with 19 RBIs and a team-leading 4 home runs.
Eric Horstman went 5-11 with 2 RBIs against Austin Peay. Horstman is hitting .311, with 8 RBIs and 20 runs scored. Horstman leads the team with five stolen bases in seven attempts. Freshman Casey Johnson is the probable starter for the Redhawks. Johnson (1-3) has 15 strikeouts in 22.1 innings pitched. Ernie Bracamonte and Eric Horstman have started in 91 consecutive games for the Redhawks. Both players have not missed a game during their career at Southeast. Coach Mark Hogan nears another career milestone as he nears the 700 win plateau. Coach Hogan has a career record of 698-510 n his 24th year as a college head coach. In his 11th year at Southeast Coach Hogan has a record of 321-254. Following Tuesday's game the Redhawks will be at home for a three-game series against conference rival Eastern Illinois. The Redhawks will play a doubleheader on Saturday with the series finale on Sunday the first pitch is scheduled for 1:00 p.m. on both days. The Indians (24-12, 5-4 Sunbelt) have went 5-4 since they played the Redhawks on March 29th. The Indians are led offensively by Geoff Desmond. The senior infield is hitting .350, with 41 RBIs and 8 home runs. Last time against Southeast Desmond went 1-4, with one run scored and two RBIs. Junior outfielder Kevin Kull Jr. is hitting .314, with 26 RBIs and 5 home runs. Kull went 3-5, with 2 runs scored and 2 RBIs against Southeast on March 29th. Tyler Goodwin is the probable starter for the Indians. Goodwin (2-2) has a 1.88 ERA in five starts this season. Goodwin has recorded 15 strikeouts in 24 innings pitched. The Indians have outscored opponents 254 to 170 in 36 games this season. Keith Kessinger is in his 3rd year as head coach at Arkansas State with a record of 77-69. |
