Southeast Will Travel To Big 12 Stronghold Oklahoma State Indians will take on the No. 15 ranked Cowboys

Cape Girardeau, Mo. (April 22, 2002) - The Southeast Missouri State Indians baseball team will travel to Stillwater, Oklahoma this Tuesday to take on the Cowboys of Oklahoma State in a non-conference battle. The Tribe lost last season by the score of 10-7 in Stillwater. Southeast is coming off a 1-1 week that saw them lose to rival Southern Illinois in Carbondale 10-5, but win a rain-shortened game against Lipscomb, 3-1. They come into the game with Oklahoma State having lost last season's match-up 10-7, and are 0-3 lifetime against the Cowboys. Oklahoma State comes into the match-up as the No. 15 ranked team in the nation. They lost two of three last weekend to Nebraska, but had won six of their last seven in non-conference action gainst Centenary, Oral Roberts and San Francisco. They are third in the Big 12 wit h an 8-6 record. The Cowboys are 4th in the league in hitting with a .323 team batting average, and have clubbed 56 home runs on the season. Daylon Monette is leading the team in average wit h a .394 mark in 39 games. He is second on the team wit h six home runs and tied for first with 42 RBI's. The big man in the lineup is Paul Powell. Powell is batting just .297 but has a team-leading 12 homers and is tied with Monette for the team lead in RBI's with 42. The Cowboys are led by two undefeated pitchers. Staff ace Chris Reilly is 6-0 with a 2.53 ERA. Scott Baker is 5-0 with a 2.68 ERA. Reilly has a team-leading 42 strikeouts. Justin Mccage is the workhorse in the pen wit h14 apperances and a 3-0 record. Senior catcher Tristen McDonald is still maintaining his stronghold on the team batting average lead wit ha .360 mark. He is second in homers wit h three and first in RBI's wit h27. Senior center fielder Vern Hatton is leading the team in runs (31), hits (45), doubles (12), triples (7), total bases (77), slugging percentage (.606), and hit by pitch (5). He continues to be second in the nation in triples per game. Senior second baseman Clemente Bonilla is leading the team in on base percentage with a .444 mark. Senior ace Brad Purcell continues to shine. He recorded his 6th win of the season this weekend against Lipscomb, pushing his record to 6-2 with a 2.81 ERA and a team-leading 51 strikeouts. Senior Brandon Smith is 6-1 with a 4.06 ERA and has 41 strikeouts and only 18 walks. |
