Redhawks Baseball Prepares for Southern Illinois

CAPE GIRARDEAU, Mo.- (Wednesday, April 27, 2005) Southeast Missouri will be on the road Wednesday for a single game against the Southern Illinois Salukis in Carbondale. The first pitch is scheduled for 3:00 p.m. at Abe Martin Field. On March 10th the Redhawks used quality pitching by Derek Herbig to defeat the Salukis, 7-3. The Salukis hold a 36-19 advantage all-time against the Redhawks.

Scouting Southeast

The Redhawks are coming off a weekend series against conference rival Eastern Illinois. The Redhawks (16-22, 7-8 OVC) pulled to within a game of .500 in the OVC with the three-game sweep of the Panthers.

Ernie Bracamonte went 6-11, with three RBIs and four runs scored against Eastern Illinois. On the season Bracamonte is hitting .338, with 20 RBIs and 3 home runs. Bracamonte leads the Redhawks with 50 hits, 68 total bases and 27 runs scored.

Frank Montiel went 2-9, with four RBIs and two runs scored in the weekend series against Eastern Illinois. Montiel leads the team with a .340 batting average, 12 doubles, 30 RBIs and a .468 slugging percentage.

Freshman James Clayton went 4-9, with four RBIs and two runs scored against Eastern Illinois.

Eric Horstman went 5-11 with five runs scored over the weekend. On the season Horstman is hitting .338, with 26 runs scored and 8 stolen bases in 10 attempts.

Redhawks pitchers Joey Evans and Jamie McAlister pitched complete games in the weekend series against Eastern Illinois. In game one Evans allowed 2 runs while scattering 13 hits and striking out 7 EIU batters. In game two Jamie McAlister pitched a seven inning complete game allowing two runs on seven hits while striking out five.


 

 

Ernie Bracamonte and Eric Horstman have started in 95 consecutive games for the Redhawks. Both players have not missed a game during their career at Southeast.

Coach Mark Hogan reached another career milestone as he won his 700th game against Eastern Illinois on Saturday. Coach Hogan has a career record of 701-511-3 in his 24th year as a college head coach. In his 11th year at Southeast Coach Hogan has a record of 324-255-1.

Following Wednesday's game the Redhawks will resume conference play as they travel to Richmond, Kentucky for a three-game series against Eastern Kentucky. The Redhawks will play a doubleheader on Saturday with the series finale on Sunday the first pitch is scheduled for 12:00 p.m. CST, on both days.

Scouting Southern Illinois

The Salukis have won five of their last six games and most recently won two of three games against Missouri Valley Conference opponent Evansville. The Salukis (25-15, 9-6 MVC) are currently in third place in the MVC.

The Salukis are led offensively by P.J. Finigan. The senior infielder is hitting .365, with 28 RBIs and 3 home runs.

Sophomore outfielder Kevin Koski is hitting .350, with 39 runs scored and 17 RBIs.

Junior outfielder Matt Brewer leads the Salukis with 34 RBIs and 5 home runs while batting .302 on the season.

Dan Callahan is in his 11th year as head coach at Southern Illinois with a record of 276-314-1.
