Hopkins Named OVC, National Player of the Week
Brentwood, Tenn. (May 5, 2003)- After hitting .684 and jacking five homers with 13 RBI on the week, senior left fielder Brian Hopkins has been named the Collegiate Baseball Newspaper/Louisville Slugger National player of the week, as well as the Ohio Valley Conference's player of the week as announced by the league office today in Brentwood. Hopkins went 13-19 on the week with five homers, three doubles and 13 RBI. He had 31 total bases en route to a 1.632 slugging percentage. On Sunday, Hopkins hit three homers and set the school record for hits in a game with seven. He also tied the school record with Denver Stuckey for at bats in a game. Hopkins is hitting .433 on the season with 16 homers and 50 RBI. He is five long balls shy of the school record of 21 set by Charlie Marino in 1998. He extended his team-high hitting streak on Sunday to 17 games. Over the course of the streak the New Brighton, Minn. Native is hitting .569 with 41 hits, nine doubles, 13 homers, and 33 RBI. He is slugging a massive 1.236 while helping the team to a .343 batting average over the span of the streak. His on base percentage over the streak is a staggering .627. Hopkins and the Tribe will be back in action tomorrow night as they travel to Springfield to take on the Bears of Southwest Missouri State in a two-game set. The team will then come home on Saturday and Sunday and play its final three regular-season home games as they play host to the Eagles of Morehead State. Saturday will be parent's day at the park and Sunday will be Senior day. |
