Purcell Nabs Pitcher of the Week Honors Righty held opponents to a .125 average for the week
Brentwood, Tenn. (May 6, 2002) - Southeast Missouri State Baseball senior right hander Brad Purcell has been named the Ohio Valley Conference's Pitcher of the Week as announced by the league office today. The Ipswitch, Australia native hurled a complete-game victory against Tennessee Tech this past weekend in which he limited the Eagles to a .125 batting average, three hits, two runs (one earned), and struck out a career-high 11 batters, while walking only one. Purcell is well on his way to a career year as he has compiled a league best (tied with Southeast senior Brandon Smith) record at 8-2. He leads the league in innings pitched (88.1), is second in games started with 12, and third in complete games with two. He currently leads the Indians in strikeouts with 72, and his opponents .242 batting average is second only to junior Tim Alvarez. His ERA of 3.21 is second only to Alvarez's 2.82. Purcell and the Indians will be back in action tomorrow as they play host to the Missouri Tigers, then face off in a crucial OVC series next weekend against the Panthers of Eastern Illinois University. |
