Indians Play Host to In-State Rival Mizzou Team will look to gear up for crucial contest this weekend

Cape Girardeau, Mo. (May 6, 2002) - The Southeast Missouri State Baseball Program will play host to the University of Missouri Tigers Tuesday at 5 p.m. at Capaha Field. This is the second of two meetings between the two teams this season. Southeast is coming off a 3-1 week that saw them defeat Saint Louis University 5-4 in 10 innings and take two out of three from Tennessee Tech in Cookeville. Mizzou comes into the contest having just been swept by Big 12 foe Oklahoma State in a three-game series. They are 23-24 on the season and 9-14 in the Big !2 as they try to stay afloat in the conference race. The Tigers bring in a potent offense that boasts a team average of .310 and is sparked by seven players above .300. Cody Ehlers is leading the taam with a .374 batting average followed by Lee Laskowski and Jayce Tingler at .370 and .360, respectively. Tingler brings to the game a 23-game hitting streak. Mick Weiss is the power hitter in the lineup banging out 10 homers and driving in 50 runs. Mizzou's pitching staff has been its Achilles heel this season as they have accumulated a team ERA of 7.30. They are led by Abel Newton and Justin James. the two have started the majority of the contests for the Tigers and have a 6-7 record between them. Senior centerfielder Vern Hatton hit streak extend to 22 games before it was snapped on the second game of a double-header Saturday. He currently leads the team in average (.369), runs scored (40), hits (58), triples (7), RBI's (38), total bases (99), slugging (.631), and hit by pitches (7). He is tied for the team lead in home runs with 5. Senior Tristen McDonald is just seven points back of Hatton in average and is tied in homers and four back in RBI's. Junior Zach Borwiak sits at .327 and Junior third baseman Denver Stuckey, as well as junior left fielder Brian Hopkins are both batting over .300. Senior Brad Purcell was named the OVC Pitcher of the Week this past week as he shut down Tennessee Tech's offense allowing only one earned run and striking out 11. He raised his record to 8-2 on the season. He is tied with senior Brandon Smith in win/loss. Purcell is leading the team in strikeouts with 72. Junior Tim Alvarez picked up wins at Saint Louis and Tech. He pitched a complete-game nine inning affair against the Eagles to record his fourth win of the season. He leads the team in ERA with a 2.82 average. He has also limited batters to a .176 average with runners on base. The Indians will play host to a crucial series this weekend against the Panthers of Eastern Illinois. They will play two games on Saturday beginning at 2 p.m. and one on Sunday beginning at 1 p.m. This weekend will be Parents Weekend and also include Senior Day festivities on Sunday. |
