Tribe Takes No 2 Seed Into OVC Tournament

Cape Girardeau, Mo. (May 19, 2003) - The Southeast Missouri State baseball team will head into the OVC Tournament this week on a three game winning streak and will be the No. 2 seed as they face-off against the Colonels of Eastern Kentucky at 11 a.m. on Wednesday. The Tribe is coming off a three-game sweep of the Murray State 'Breds in Murray. With the sweep, the Tribe moved into the No. 2 spot in the OVC Tournament. Brian Hopkins is on fire. He leads the team in hitting with a .421 average and is first in homers and RBI with 18 and 59, respectively. Hopkins is sixth in the nation in homers and 15th in batting average. Borowiak is hitting .385 and is second with 15 long balls. Justin Christian is having a stellar season as he is hitting .375 with 12 homers and 44 RBI. Alvarez is leading the pitching staff with an 13-3 record, and a 2.99 ERA. He leads the nation with his 13 wins. Ryan Forsyth and Stan Skakalski are 5-2 and 4-0, respectively as Jon Nourie leads the OVC in strikeouts per nine innings with ahis 11.62 per game mark. Bill Clayton has won four games in a row to push his record to 4-2. Eastern Kentucky is 21-27, and 8-11 in the OVC. Before this weekend's sweep of Morehead State, the Colonels had lost 10 in a row. Josh Anderson is leading team and the conference in hitting with his .439 mark. He is a semi-finalist for the Player of the Year award. He leads the nation with 48 stolen bases. Brandon Scott and Chris Clark are 3-2 on the year. Scott leads the team with a 4.99 ERA, while Nick Adams leads the team with a 5-3 record. Eastern is the best hitting team in the league with a .333 average, just 10 points behind Southeast's .323. The team has an 8.00 ERA which is second to last in the league. Southeast and the Colonels will be the Tournament's first game, as Tennessee Austin Peay and Eastern Illinois will play after the Tribe and the nightcap will feature Murray State and Tennessee Tech. |
