Alvarez Earns National Pitcher of the Week Honors
Tucson, Ariz. (May 27, 2003) - Southeast Missouri ace and 2003 OVC Pitcher of the Year Tim Alvarez was named a "Louisville Slugger" National Pitcher of the Week by Collegiate Baseball after throwing the first no-hitter in OVC Tournament history last week in a 4-0 win over Austin Peay. Alvarez, 14-3, walked four batters and hit two, but was in complete control the entire game with only two batters reaching second base. Alvarez struck out nine batters and walked only four en-route to his school and OVC record 14th win. Alvarez, a converted first baseman, is well on his way to All-American status. The school's best pitcher over the last two seasons, he has went 19-4 with a 2.84 ERA over the last two seasons, and has had the league and team's best ERA both seasons. He was named OVC Pitcher of the Week twice this season. His 108 innings pitched rank fourth all-time in a season at Southeast and his 19 career wins is sixth best. Outfielder Brian Hopkins was named the National Player of the Week earlier this season by the same publication. |
