Borowiak Taken By Giants In 49th Round Shortstop is second Indian taken in Draft
New York (June 5, 2002) - Southeast Missouri State Baseball junior shortstop Zach Borowiak was selected in the 49th round, 1455th overall, today in the second day of the 2002 Major League Baseball Amateur Draft. Borowiak was selected by the San Francisco Giants. As a junior Borowiak can still play next year for the Indians as long as he doesn't sign with the Giants. San Francisco must now offer Borowiak a contract within 15 days or else the junior becomes a free agent. Should the Giants offer him a contract and he doesn't sign, they own the rights to Borowiak up to the day prior to next year's draft. Borowiak had another stellar season this year as he was named Second-Team All-OVC at shortstop. He was also named to the All-OVC Tournament this season. He also moved in to second place behind Clemente Bonilla for all-time assists in a career. The junior batted .324 this season cranking out four home runs and 35 RBI's. He hit his first career grand slam at Memphis earlier in the season. He had three triples including two in the same game. He stole 5-6 bases and had a team high 146 assists on the season. Borowiak was the second Indian drafted this season, with pitcher Brandon Smith going to the Red Sox in the 18th round. All 50 rounds were completed today with the two being the lone representatives drafted. |
