Alvarez, Christian Named First Team All-South Region
Lexington, Ky. (June 11, 2003) - The awards keep rolling in for the seniors of this year's Southeast Missouri Baseball team. A week after being named to All-America Teams, Tim Alvarez and Justin Christian have both been named First Team All-South Region by the American Baseball Coaches Association. Zach Borowiak was named to the second team. Alvarez was 14-3 this season as he was named the Ohio Valley Conference's Pitcher of the Year. He was twice named Pitcher of the Week in the league, and was named the National Pitcher of the Week by Collegiate Baseball after throwing the first-ever no-hitter in OVC Tournament. His 14 wins is a Southeast record and tie an OVC mark. He is third nationally in that category. He had the league's best ERA for the second-straight season at 2.74 and led the OVC in wins, ERA, opponent's batting average, innings pitched, complete games and shutouts, while being second in strikeouts and runners picked off. He finished off his career by being selected by the San Francisco Giants in the 36th round of the Major League Draft. Justin Christian was the Rookie of the Year this season in the OVC after finishing in the top ten in ten different categories. He was second in stolen bases, third in triples, fourth in homers, fifth in hits, runs, slugging, and total bases, seventh in RBI and batting average and tenth in on base percentage. Overall, he was second on the team in batting average with a .376 mark and third in homers and RBI with 13 and 48, respectively. Zach Borowiak was a second-team All-OVC selection for the second-straight season. He was a first team pick his sophomore season and set career highs this season as he hit .372 with 15 homers and 59 RBI. He was second on the team in homers and tied for first in RBI. He also had some memorable moments during the season. He became the school's all-time leader in doubles as he hit 19 on the season moving his career total to 72. He also moved into the top spot all-time in at bats as he finished with 830. His 59 RBI is third all-time on the season list, and his 154 career RBI is fourth all time. He ranks second in career hits with 261 behind only Jeremy Johnson, and he also trails Johnson by just three games on the all time list with 213. Borowiak capped off his career by being drafted in the 14th round by the Boston Red Sox. Southeast was one of three teams, joining Southern Miss and South Carolina to have two players on the first team. They join Louisiana State as the only team to have three representatives in the region. The American Baseball Coaches Association All-American Team will be announced in Omaha at the College World Series.
