White Team Posts 3-2 Win In First Game of Steak & Beans World Series
Oct. 12, 2007
CAPE GIRARDEAU, Mo. - Redshirt freshman Louie Haseltine (St. Louis, Mo./DeSmet Jesuit) blasted a walk-off home run with two outs in the bottom of the 10th inning to give the White team a 3-2 victory over the Black team Thursday afternoon in the first game of the annual Steak & beans World Series at Capaha Field. The game was mostly dominated by pitching as senior Lance Rhodes (Sikeston, Mo./Saint Louis) and junior Daniel Schuh (Jacksonville, Fla./Bishop Kenny) waged war on the mound through the first six innings. Redshirt senior Zachary Blemker (Vincennes, Ind./Vincennes CC) gave White an early 1-0 advantage after scoring on a wild pitch in the first inning, but the Black squad responded with a pair of rally in the top of the sixth behind back-to-back one out hits from juniors Tyrell Cummings (Muskogee, Okla./Seminole State CC) and Justin Wheeler (Lakewood, Calif./Golden West CC). Both players later crossed the plate on a single from junior Matt Wagner (Wahoo, Neb./Nebraska). In the bottom half of the inning, redshirt senior Sean Zollner (Sparta, Ill./Sparta) tied the game at 2-2 with an RBI single of his own. Both teams continued to battle until top of the 10th when the Black team filled up the bases off redshirt sophomore relief pitcher Ryan Poole (Bradford, Ark./Three Rivers CC) with no outs. Poole regrouped by forcing Wagner to hit into a double play and striking out junior Kieran Bradford (Brisbane, Australia/Three Rivers CC) to end the rally before Haseltine hit his homer off sophomore Andy Stephens (Scott City, Mo./Scott City) in the bottom half of the stanza. Poole earned the win and Stephens was tagged with the loss. Sophomore Jim Klocke (St. Louis, Mo./St. John Vianney) led the White team with two hits, while sophomore Nick Harris (Alabaster, Ala./Thompson) and Wheeler each produced two-hit games for the Black team. The second game of the series will be played on Saturday, Oct. 13 with the first pitch set for 1 p.m. Black 000 002 000 0 - 2 7 1 White 100 001 000 1 - 3 7 0 |
