Grey Team Wins Steak and Beans Series
Oct. 22, 2009
CAPE GIRARDEAU, Mo. - The Grey team used a four-run seventh inning to seal its 7-5 win over the White team and win this year's Steak & Beans Series. After losing the first two games of the series, the Grey team rallied for three-straight wins to take the five-game set.
The Grey team, which will celebrate its series win with a steak dinner, scored a combined 18 runs in its three victories.
After scoring once in the first, the Grey team tacked on two more runs in the top of the fifth. Kenton Parmely and Brett Russell each scored to extend the lead to 3-0.
The White team answered with two runs of its own in the bottom of the inning when Blake Slattery smacked a two-run triple to narrow the gap to 3-2.
The White team, however, made things interesting in the bottom of the ninth when it had the tying runners on base with a run already in. But, closer Trent Wise recorded the final out on a strikeout to send the Grey team to victory.
Rupp and Russell led the Grey squad with three hits apiece, while Slattery and Trenton Moses did the same for the White.
There were a combined 25 hits on the night, including 13 by the Grey and 12 by the White.
The Steak and Beans Series marked the end of Southeast's fall workouts.
