In the OVC, Southeast has a two-point home loss to Tennessee Tech, a 31-point road win over Tennessee State and a road loss to Austin Peay. In non-conference action Southeast has wins over Truman State, Missouri-Rolla, Robert Morris, Cleveland State, Southern Illinois, Southwest Missouri, Campbell and Jackson State with losses to Toledo, Mississippi Valley State, and Houston. Murray State is 6-6 overall and 1-0 in the OVC after a Saturday night OVC home win over Tennessee-Martin. Tennessee-Martin is 4-6 overall and 0-1 in the OVC. THE COACHES: Gary Garner is 67-34 in his fourth season at Southeast and is 314-198 in his 18th year as a collegiate head coach. He won a Division II national championship when he guided Fort Hays State to a 34-0 season in 1995-96. Known for having teams ready at tournament time, Garner has taken teams to the finals of conference tournaments in six of the last seven years and has won five of those title contests. Garner is 2-6 vs. Murray State and is 5-2 vs. Tennessee-Martin. Tevester Anderson is 56-21 in his third season at Murray State. He is 4-2 vs. Southeast. Bret Campbell is 14-25 in his second season at Tennessee-Martin. He is 1-2 vs. Southeast. THE SERIES: Murray State leads the series 28-13. Southeast leads the series with Tennessee-Martin 30-14. LAST SEASON: Southeast won two of three games against Murray State, ending the Racers 47-game home winning streak with a 84-78 win at Murray, losing 77-60 at the Show Me Center and winning 67-56 in the OVC Tournament finals in Nashville. The Indians won two of three games with Tennessee-Martin, losing 75-66 at Martin, winning 80-68 at the Show Me Center and 76-74 in the opening round of the OVC Tournament at the Show Me Center. SO MUCH FOR CLOSE GAMES: After playing a number of very close games in the early portion of the season, Southeast's last two games have been blow outs, one good, one bad. Thursday night's 88-57 win at Tennessee State was Southeast's largest margin of victory in an OVC game and was also the largest margin of victory ever over a Division I opponent. Saturday's 88-60 loss at Austin Peay was Southeast's worst loss of the season. INDIAN DEFENSE LEADS OVC: Despite giving up 88 points at Austin Peay, Southeast still ranks first in OVC field goal percentage defense, scoring defense and 3-point field goal percentage defense. Southeast allows opponents to shoot .410 from the field, .321 from three and allows just 67.4 points per game. Last season, Southeast, Southeast ranked fifth nationally in field goal percentage defense (38%) and 17th nationally in scoring defense (61 ppg). INDIANS LEAD OVC IN SCORING MARGIN: Southeast leads the OVC in scoring margin at plus 5.4. The Indians average 72.9 points per game while allowing 67.4. Southeast ranks second in the OVC in 3-point field goal percentage at .404. STOKES NAMED ALL-TOURNAMENT AT SUN CLASSIC: Senior guard Michael Stokes was named to the 40th Annual SunClassic all-tournament team after scoring 21 points, pulling down 10 rebounds and handing out four assists in the Indians consolation round win over Jackson State. It was the first double-double for a Southeast player this season. In the opening round loss to Houston, Stokes had 15 points, five rebounds and three assists. Stokes was the OVC Player of the Week on Dec. 18. He leads the team in assists, steals, free throw percentage and minutes played and is second in scoring and third in rebounding. Stokes, who has scored in double figures the last eight games, averages 13.6 points, 4.5 rebounds and 4.1 assists per game. He is shooting .444 from the field, .387 from three and .786 from the line while playing an average of 32.8 minutes per game. SANDERS LEADS OVC IN THREES: Amory Sanders, who was sidelined for three games with a foot injury returned to action last Thursday night and was 5-5 from three against Tennessee State. He leads the OVC in 3-point field goal percentage at .577. He is second in the league in 3-pointers per game with 2.73. Sanders, who was 7-10 from three in the win over Robert Morris, is 30-52 for the season. McCUTHISON LEADS TEAM IN SCORING AND REBOUNDING: Senior Emmanuel McCuthison is the Southeast leader in points and rebounds. He is averaging 14.4 points and 5.4 rebounds per game. McCuthison had a career high 29 points against Southern Illinois. Against SIU, McCuthison sizzled in the first half when he scored 20 points with 6-10 from the field, 4-5 from three and 4-6 from the line. For the game, McCuthison, nicknamed e-mail, was 9-18 from the field, 6-9 from three and 5-8 from the line. Earlier this season, he was named to the all-tournament team in the Energia Systems Thanksgiving Tournament in Kansas City. He averaged 15.3 points and four rebounds per game in the three tournament games while shooting 61% from the field, 50% from three and 83% from the line DEMOND ESTABLISHES NEW SUN CLASSIC RECORD: Drew DeMond established a new SunClassic tournament record for blocked shots with eight against Jackson State. DeMond's eight blocks also tied the Don Haskins Center record for blocked shots. The record came in the 40th anniversary of the tournament that has seen 160 games played. After 13 games played this season, DeMond is second in the OVC with 22 blocks. FOUR POSITION STARTER: Monte Gordon, who had a team-high nine rebounds vs. Austin Peay is the probable starter at the four position. He is one of four players who have started at the four position this season. Drew DeMond has started seven games, but Gordon, Tim Scheer, and Daniel Weaver have all had a shot at the starting role. Scheer has started four games, Gordon one game and Weaver one game. POST BY COMMITTEE: Southeast continues to rotate three players at the post position. Nyah Jones averages 18.2 minutes per game and has 11 starts, Terry Rogers averages 18.1 minutes per game and has started two games while Daniel Weaver averages 10.4 minutes per game, Rogers averages 6.6 points and 5.0 rebounds while Weaver, who also plays at the four position, averages points and 2.2 rebounds per game. Rogers is scheduled to start against Murray State. INJURIES: Drew DeMond missed the Austin Peay game with a groin injury after playing only 8-minutes against Tennessee State because of a deep blister on the ball of his foot. He is probable for Murray. Daniel Weaver missed the Austin Peay game with an ankle sprain suffered in practice the day prior to the game. He is probable for the Murray game. Amory Sanders, who is suffering from a deep stone bruise on his right foot, missed three games. He did not make the trip to El Paso, but came back to play against Tennessee State and Austin Peay. Monte Gordon has missed five games because of recurring back problems and although the back still bothers him, he played 13-minutes against Tennessee State on Senior guard Matt Morris has not played this season because of mononucleosis. AT THE SHOW ME CENTER: Southeast is 5-1 at the Show Me Center this season and is 160-46 (.777) since the Show Me Center opened in 1987. Last season, Southeast again led the OVC in attendance with 5,066 fans per game. After six games this season, Southeast averages 4,886 fans per game. |
