Zac Roman is in his second season as an assistant men's basketball coach at Southeast Missouri State University. He came to Cape Girardeau after serving five seasons as an assistant coach and interim head coach at Johnson County Community College in Overland Park, Kan.

Roman was named the 2007 NJCAA District 10 Coach of the Year and led Johnson County CC to the national tournament.


A 1996 graduate of Wichita State, Roman had served as an assistant coach at Johnson County since 2003. He served as interim head coach over the final three months of the 2006-07 season. At the helm, Roman guided the Cavaliers to an 11-9 record, Region VI championship, District 10 championship and the program's second berth in the NJCAA Division II National Tournament. In addition, he was named NJCAA Disctrict 10 Coach of the Year.

Two of his players in 2006-07 earned All-Kansas Jayhawk Conferece East Division honors with one also being named a third team All-American. Both players ranked among the top scorers in the country.

Roman coached 11 players, including two All-Americans, at Johnson County CC that earned scholarships to continue their playing careers.


Prior to stepping in as interim head coach on Jan. 17, 2007, Roman served as the top assistant as was involved in all facets of the program. He worked regularly with the guards and with scouting preparation. Roman was also the recruiting coordinator. As an assistant, JCCC won Region VI titles in 2004 and 2006. Six players during his tenure earned East Jayhawk Conference honors, two were named NJCAA preseason All-Americans and two earned NJCAA Academic All-American accolades. Roman coached 11 players at JCCC that earned scholarships at four-year institutions.

Roman also directed summer camps and advanced clinics for the Cavaliers. In 2005, the school set camp attendance records. He also served as an adjunct instructor of basketball and part-time facilities supervisor.

He has served on camp staffs for Bill Self at Kansas, Dana Altman at Creighton, Terry Carroll at Denver and Quin Snyder, head coach of the Austin Toros of the National Basketball Developmental League (NBDL) and former head coach at Missouri.

Roman also has high school coaching experience as head freshman coach and camp director at Kapaun Mt. Carmel High School in Wichita, Kan. Prior to his stint at Carmel, he served two years at The Wichita Independent School, where he helped form the middle school boys basketball program.

A nine-time high school letterwinner in basketball, baseball and cross country, Roman turned down several NAIA and junior college basketball offers to pursue a baseball career. He played two seasons at Pratt Community College in Pratt, Kan., before a shoulder injury ended his playing career.
