Tigers Get The Best Of The Indians Winans leads all scorers with 25 points

CAPE GIRARDEAU, Mo. (January 7, 2002) - Southeast was up by eight at the half and by as many as 16 in the first half, but a tremendous second half shooting performance by Tennessee State helped them hand Southeast its 11th loss of the season and drop them to 0-2 in the conference, as the Tigers beat the Indians 94-82, Monday at the Show Me Center. Southeast (2-11, 0-2) showed dominance in the first half as they shot 56 percent from the field and 55 percent from behind the three-point arc, but they were outgunned in the second half as Tennessee State (5-9, 2-2) hit 70 percent from behind the arc and had clutch free-throws to secure the win. Tennessee State outscored Southeast by 20 points in the second half. With a minute and a half left, Tennessee State's Olushula Ajanaku hit two back to back three-pointers from the top of the key to put the score at 84-74. TSU's Darnal Thomas hit two free-throw's to make the lead 12. Freshman Derek Winans and junior Kenny Johnson hit quick threes late in the game to cut the deficit to as much as 10 points, but couldn't get any closer. Winans led all scorers with 25 points as he went 5-10 from behind the arc, and 9-14 from the field. Junior Tim Scheer tied his career-best in scoring as he netted 23 points. He went 9-9 from the free throw line. Johnson had 10 points in the game. TSU was led in scoring by Ajanaku with 24 points and Kyle Rolston had 21. Roderick James had 13 points and 8 rebounds as Garret Richardson had 14 points. Southeast next plays host to Eastern Kentucky University this Thursday at 7:30 p.m. in the Show Me Center. |
