Morehead Uses Late Run To Defeat Southeast Winans leads all scorers with 20 points
Cape Girardeau, Mo. (January 12, 2002) - Southeast was up by three points with 38 seconds left in the game before three turnovers and clutch play from Morehead State's Ricky Minard gave away the game and let Morehead steal a victory from the Indians 59-53, Saturday at the Show Me Center. Southeast (3-12, 1-3) got its first lead of the game with 16:50 left to play in the second half at 30-28. Neither team shot well in the first half as Morehead (7-7, 2-2) only mustered 37 percent from the field and Southeast was an ice-cold 12 percent from behind the arc. Senior Monte Gordon hit two free throw's with three minutes to go to re-take the lead for the Indians at 51-50. The margin stayed the same until 54 seconds left as Minard was fouled behind the three-point line and was sent to the line to shoot three. He made two and cut the Southeast lead to one. He then proceeded to steal the inbounds pass and score again to give Morehead a one-point lead with 38 seconds to go. Southeast got the ball deep in their end and after a Morehead foul, threw the ball away once again, as Ramon Kelly stole the ball and passed ahead to Minard to put the exclamation point on the game with a resounding dunk to give the Eagles a six point lead. Southeast got the ball one more time, but junior forward Tim Scheer's desperation three wouldn't go and Morehead made three more late free-throws to seal the fate of the Indians. Southeast was led by freshman guard Derek Winans with 20 points and five rebounds. He was 4-6 from the field and 2-2 from the line. Junior forward Drew DeMond had seven points and six rebounds. Morehead was led by Minard with 17 points. Kyle Umberger had 16 points and 11 rebounds, as Iker Lopez had nine points and 10 boards.
Southeast next travels to Martin, Tennessee to take on the Skyhawks of UT-Martin on January 17 at 7:45 p.m. |
