Men's Hoops Falls To Murray State, 85-72 Tim Scheer and Derek Winans score 14 points apiece to lead Southeast.
MURRAY, Ky. (January 19, 2002) -Justin Burdine matched his career-high with 33 points Saturday night to lead Murray State to an 85-72 win over Southeast Missouri. Southeast was down by only one at the half, but was outscored by the racers by 12 in the second half, as they moved toward their ninth win of the season. Junior Tim Scheer and freshman Derek Winans had 14 points apiece to lead Southeast Missouri (3-14, 1-5). Junior Drew DeMond and sophomore Demarcus Hence had 13 and 12 points, respectively. Burdine sank 12-of-23 shots, going 5-of-11 from 3-point range, to lead four Racers in double figures. Burdine also scored 33 points in a 100-61 win over West Florida on Nov. 17. Antione Whelchel scored 15 points, Antonio Henderson added 13 and Cuthbert Victor scored 12 for Murray State (9-9, 3-3 Ohio Valley Conference). Victor also had a game-high 10 rebounds. The Racers committed only five turnovers and outrebounded Southeast Missouri 38-36. Murray State went just 29-of-66 from the floor (44 percent), but went 8-of-20 from 3-point range (40 percent) and 19-of-23 from the free-throw line (83 percent). The Racers snapped a four-game losing streak, while the Indians lost for the sixth time in their last seven contests. Southeast will next be in action January 24 as they play host to the Conference's best team in Tennessee Tech at the Show Me Center at 7:00 p.m. The AP contributed to this story. |
