Redhawks Stun OVC Leader Samford in OT, 72-65

CAPE GIRARDEAU - Southeast Missouri came from behind to send the game into overtime and then outscored league leading Samford 12-5 in the extra period to claim a 72-65 Ohio Valley Conference win.

Samford, 11-8 overall and 6-2 in the OVC, held a four point lead with 1:53 remaining in regulation but Reggie Golson and Derek Winans scored with Winans tieing the game at 60-60 with 34-seconds remaining. Samford held for the final shot but a 3-pointer by Jon Mills rimmed out at the buzzer sending the game into overtime.

The Bulldogs' Bryan Boerjan started the OT with a conventional 3-point play, but Golson tied the game with a conventional 3-point play and Dainmon Gonner put Southeast ahead for good with a 3-pointer from the baseline.

Southeast, 9-10 and 4-4 in the OVC, was led by Golson with 20 points while Terrick Willoughby added 16, Gonner 14, Winans 11 and Ryan "Fuzzy" Belcher 11. Gonner and Golson each had seven rebounds.

Samford was led by J. Robert Merritt with 20 points, while Randall Gulina had 15 and Jerry Smith 12. Smith led all rebounders with eight.

Southeast goes on the road to face Tennessee-Martin on Thursday night in a 7:30 p.m. game.
