Southeast Returns Home to Top Skyhawks
Feb. 5, 2004 CAPE GIRARDEAU - It was a case of home sweet home for Southeast in its victory over Tennessee-Martin Tuesday night-but not at first. After a four-game road trip, in which the team went winless, Southeast (10-10, 3-6 OVC) returned home to a crowd of 3,506 to beat Tennessee-Martin 89-78. UTM (8-13, 3-6 OVC) started the game on a 10-0 run, before Norman Prather hit a jumper at 16:31 in the first half. Martin would gain a lead of as many as 11 on four occasions, before the Indians worked into the lead. Southeast used a 13-2 run to close out the first half to make the score 35-35. In the second half, it was all Southeast as the Indians took the lead and never relinquished it.
Derek Winans led all scorers in the game with 28 points, on three-of-six from long range and a perfect seven-of-seven from the free throw line.
Brandon Griffin just missed a double-double, as he had 21 points to go along with nine rebounds. Fellow senior Damarcus Hence had 18 points, on four-of-five from three and a perfect four-for-four from the free throw line. Meanwhile, junior Dainmon Gonner put in 14 points in the win. Southeast shot an outstanding 51.7 percent from the field for the game, including 46.7 percent from three. Martin also shot well, hitting 50 percent of its shots in the game. Jared Newson led the Skyhawks with 21 points, while Jeremy Kelly and Tyler George chipped in with 20 and 11, respectively. Cleve Woodfork led all players with 10 rebounds. Southeast's next matchup is Saturday against rival Murray State at the Show Me Center. Due to being on television, the game time is 2 p.m. |
