Cape Girardeau, Mo. (November 8, 2001) - For the first time since the beginning of the 1999-2000 season, Southeast lost an exhibition game to start the season as they fell victim to the Rivermen of Missouri-St. Louis, 75-72. If all holds true though, that was also the last time Southeast went to the NCAA Tournament.

The Indians started out the game on fire as the one-two punch of freshmen Derek Winans, and Brett Hale rained three pointer after three pointer. Both finished the first half 4-7 from behind the arc as Southeast as a team shot 63 percent from 3-point range and 60 percent from the field. The score at halftime was 47-27 in favor of Southeast.

The second half, however, was a different story. After scoring the first points of the half running the lead to 22, UMSL put a man defense out on the Indians, virtually taking Winans and Hale out of the game and slowly inched back into the game. With 5:30 left in the game, UMSL got to within two points, but junior Demetrius King scored for three, to force a Rivermen timeout.

From then, it was back and forth. Southeast would never control the pace as the tough UMSL defense put a stop to the hot shooting of the two guards. At 1:40 left in the game, a turnover in the backcourt led to an UMSL lay up and a foul, that was converted, to give the Rivermen their first lead of the game. Junior Tim Scheer fouled out on the play. With 45 seconds to go, the Rivermen pushed their lead to four points and forced a Southeast timeout.

Coming out of the timeout, Southeast worked a play perfectly as sophomore Demarcus Hence hit a clutch three-pointer to make the UMSL lead one. The Rivermen tried to run out the clock, forcing Southeast to foul. Derrick Redd hit both ends of his free-throws to give UMSL the three-point lead again, and a desperation shot by King was short, preserving the three-point Rivermen win. Southeast was outscored in the second half 48-25.

Southeast was led in scoring by Hale with 17 points and six assists, hitting 5-9 from behind the arc. Winans followed up with 14 points of his own as he went 4-9 from three-point land. Hence had 12 points and King had 10. Junior Dan Weaver went 4-5 from the field, scoring eight.

The Rivermen got 23 points from Mindaugas Adamonis as he went 7-10 form the field and 3-4 from behind the arc. Deryn Carter and Jim Schelich had 18 and 17 points, respectively, as Scott Kassel finished with 10.

Southeast next plays host to the Dreambuilders in an exhibition game Monday, November, 12 at 7 p.m. in the Show Me Center.
