Indians Come Up Short Against Cross-State Rival Short-handed men's basketball squad falls to SW Missouri St., 73-63.
Nov. 24, 2001
SPRINGFIELD, Mo. (AP) - Robert Yanders scored 20 points on 5-of-5 shooting from 3-point range to lead Southwest Missouri State over cross-state rival Southeast Missouri State 73-63 Saturday. With Southwest Missouri (1-1) trailing 39-36 with 16:50 left in the game, Yanders started and finished a 20-6 run with 3-pointers putting the Bears up for good at 56-45. Southeast Missouri (0-2) got to within 68-61 with 57 seconds left but Yanders made 3-of-4 from the free throw line to stave off the Indians' surge. Southeast Missouri, with just eight players because of team suspensions and one player attending his brother's wedding, took an early 18-12 lead on 80 percent shooting from the field in the first 7:20. Demetrius King led the Indians in the first half with 16 points. Southwest Missouri shot just 39 percent from the field and 14 percent from the free throw line before trailing 36-32 at halftime. The Bears forced eight Indian turnovers in the first six minutes of the second half and held King to just one shot before the three-minute mark. King finished with 18 points. Brakebill had 18 points for Southwest Missouri, while Mike Wallace and Terrance McGee each scored 11. Wallace also had 12 rebounds.
