Southern Illinois Holds On For 71-58 win over Southeast Missouri

Carbondale, Ill. - Southeast Missouri played Southern Illinois, 4-0, on even terms before finally bowing 71-58. The win was the 29th straight win for the Salukis who ranked third nationally in the RPI rating, tieing Duke for the nation's longest home winning streak.

The Indians led 19-17 with 6:09 remaining in the first half, but the Salukis went on a 16-6 run to claim a 33-25 halftime lead.

Southeast, 3-2, got within six several times in the second half, but could never get closer. Dainmon Gonner led the way for Southeast with 24 points and six rebounds while Derek Winans added 14 points. Pestered by a super quick Saluki defense, Southeast Missouri shot just 37% from the field and 25% from three.

Southern Illinois was led by 16 points from freshman point guard Jamaal Tatum who had 16 points including 4-5 3-points.

Southeast Missouri will host UMKC on Saturday at the Show Me Center, Tipoff will be at 7:30 p.m.
