Indians Win Decisively Over Oakland City

Box Score

Cape Girardeau, Mo. (December 4, 2002) - The Southeast Missouri State Indian Basketball team got a much needed win tonight as they took out Division II Oakland City 88-66 in front of a crowd of 1,920 in the Show Me Center.

The weather was cold and snowy outside, but the Indians were very much hot inside on the court. Southeast came out on fire early on and jumped to a quick 27-6 lead after just five minutes into the game.

After a quick bucket from Oakland City, the Indians went on a 21-10 run to bring the score to 48-20. The lead grew to 28 points at the half as Southeast led Oakland City 53-25 at the break.

Junior forward Brandon Griffin had 14 points and 10 rebounds at the half as he continues to average a double-double a game. Sophomore guard Derek Winans had eight points and four rebounds at the half.

The lead got as high as 26 twice in the second half as the Indians coasted to the easy victory. Oakland City actually out-scored the Southeast in the second half 41-35, but the first-half difference was just too much to make up.

Southeast was led by Griffin as he pulled in 16 points and 14 rebounds. He was 6-12 from the field and 4-5 from the charity stripe. Winans had 15 points and four rebounds as he went 5-8 from the field and 3-6 from behind the arc. Junior forward Damarcus Hence had 13 points, and junior guard Demetrius King had 10 points. Junior forward Reggie Golson had 10 points and eight rebounds in his first game of the season.

Southeast now will play host to arch rival Southern Illinois this Saturday at 7 p.m. at the Show Me Center.
