Three is the Key in Southeast's Victory

CAPE GIRARDEAU - Southeast senior center Brandon Griffin scored a triple-double and the Indians hit 13 three-pointers as Southeast topped the Mighty Oaks of Oakland City 79-67.

Griffin had 12 points, 12 rebounds and 10 assists in the victory, and helped Southeast Missouri improve to 5-3 on the season. Griffin led all players on the night in both rebounds and assists.

Damarcus Hence led Southeast with 20 points, while Derek Winans and Mike Nelke added 18 and 15, respectively. Hence was 7-for-13 from the floor and a perfect 6-for-6 from the free throw line. Winans was flawless on the night, going 7-for-7 from the floor, including 4-for-4 from long range. Nelke also was impressive from beyond the arc, as he was 5-of-5 from three-point land in the first half.
 

 

The Indians went a 22-0 run to make it 31-8 with 7:45 left in the first half. Nelke scored four three-pointers in the six-minute span. Southeast would go on to increase its lead to 46-17 at the half. Southeast hit 53 percent of its three-point attempts, while making 62 percent from the field in the first half. By contrast, the mighty oaks only made 23 percent of their shots during the first half.

The second half proved a much different story. Southeast built on its lead, gaining as much as a 36-point advantage. However, Oakland City's Scott Russell scored 19 second half points, and the Mighty Oaks whittled the Southeast lead down to as few as 10. Scott finished with a game-high 21 points, and 10 boards. Meanwhile, Clint Weddle added 16 points for Oakland City.

Oakland City's drops to 5-6 on the season. Southeast will have the next week off to concentrate on finals, and will next play Monday Dec. 22. The Indians will take on North Texas that night at 7:30 p.m. at the Show Me Center
