Bills Too Tough For Indians Winans leads all scorers with 18 points
Saint Louis, Mo. (December 15, 2001) - 13-13, 9-17, and 33-67. Totals like that garnered Saint Louis University 100 percent from the free-throw line, 53 from the 3-point line, and 49 percent from the field, as they turned away the Indians Saturday 88-62. Southeast scored the first bucket of the game, but soon saw them on the wrong end of a 19-10 SLU lead, that eventually grew to a 43-23 lead. Southeast wouldn't get any closer as the half ended with the Billikens up by 21, 49-28. Southeast shot 48 percent from the field and 20 percent from behind the three-point arc in the first half. They were led by junior Kenny Johnson, who in his first game back had seven points at the half. Junior Drew DeMond had four points and five rebounds in the half. SLU shot 50 percent from the field and 63 percent from behind the arc, and were led by Marque Perry, who had 13 points in the first half going 5-8 from the field and 1-1 from three-point land. Chris Braun also chipped in with 13 points, going 5-6 from the field. Southeast started the second half on fire as freshman Derek Winans had two steals back-to-back result in four fast-break points for the Indians. However, every point the Indians scored, the Billikens answered back. The Indians soon turned ice-cold as the Billikens opened up an 83-55 lead. The lead would hold as SLU gave the Indians their sixth loss of the season. Southeast shot a season-high 51 percent from the field and was still outscored by 26 in the game. They were led in scoring by Winans who, along with SLU's Drew Dieneir, led all scorers with 18 points. Sophomore Demarcus Hence had 10 points and Junior Tim Scheer had seven rebounds and nine points. Head Coach Gary Garner thought the 24 turnovers his team committed were the dagger in their heart. "We gave them too many opportunites by turning the ball over," he said. "Many of them were unforced. I thought we didn't play well offensively, but they are a better team. We could have been in striking distance without the turnovers." Southeast comes home on Monday to play host to Mississippi Valley State at 7 p.m. at the Show Me Center. |
