Redhawks Lose Another Heart Breaker

Cape Girardeau, Mo. - For the second straight game, a last second shot spelled defeat for the Southeast Missouri State men's basketball team. Senior guard Jerry Smith of Samford drove the length of the court and scored on a layup with two-seconds remaining to give the Bulldogs a 65-64 Ohio Valley Conference win.

Freshman guard Roderick Pearson, who led Southeast in scoring with 18 points, had given the Redhawks the lead with seven seconds remaining when he drove into the lane and scored.

After the Pearson basket, Smith took the inbounds pass a drove all the way for the winning layup. He led the Bulldogs in scoring with 24 points. Randall Guilina added 21 and Travis Peterson 10 for the Bulldogs who are now 4-4 overall and 2-0 in the OVC.

Terrick Willoughby added 12 points and Michael Rembert 11 for Southeast, 3-9 overall and 1-4 in the OVC. The loss whiped out a strong comeback for the Redhawks who trailed by six points with 1:45 remaining.

Southeast will play the next two games on the road against non-conference opponents beginning with a game at Iowa State on Saturday, 1 p.m., at Hilton Coliseum in Ames, Iowa. The Redhawks will play at Purdue on Dec. 29.
