Indians Look To Exact Some Revenge On The Leathernecks Of Western Illinois Team looks to start first winning streak of season

Western Illinois is 7-4 and has won three straight games with home wins over Eastern Kentucky, Hampton and Youngtown State. The Series: Southeast leads the series 3-2 but the Leathernecks have won the last two games in the series including a 71-58 win at the Show Me Center on Dec. 1.
Series Scores 2001-02- WIU 71, SE 58 1971-72 - SE 94, WIU 93 1970-71 -- SE 104, WIU 90 1966-67 - SE 93, WIU 78 1965-66 -- WIU 84, SE 81 Earlier Game: Earlier this season at the Show Me Center, WIU took the lead at 11-9 and never looked back on the way to a 71-58 win. The Leathernecks led 35-23 at the half and Southeast could never get closer than six points in the second half. The Leathernecks had five players in double figures led by Shawn Mason with 16 points. Southeast was led by Tim Scheer who had the first double-double of his career with 19 points and 11 rebounds. The Indians shot just 36% from the floor and 12.5% from three. The Coaches: Gary Garner is 78-49 in his fifth season at Southeast. He is 325-212 in his 19th season as a collegiate head coach. Jim Kerwin is 123-141 in his 10th season at Western Illinois. Southeast Basketball Notes Winans Leads Scorers: Redshirt freshman Derek Winans, who had a career high 29 points vs. Arkansas-Little Rock, leads Southeast in scoring and assists. He averages 15.7 points and 2.8 assists per game. Winans was honored as the OVC Rookie of the Week on Nov. 26 and Dec. 3. Scheer Records Second Double-Double: Junior Tim Scheer recorded his second career double-double with 21 points and 10 rebounds against Lincoln. Scheer is second on the team in scoring and rebounding with 13.5 points and 6.2 rebounds per game. He leads the team in 3-point field goal percentage with 15-42 for .357. Scheer had a career high 23 points against North Alabama. DeMond Blocks: Drew DeMond is the active OVC career leader in blocked shots with 92. He had 26 blocks as a freshman, 48 as a sophomore and 20 this season. He had a season-high five blocks vs. Vanderbilt. DeMond leads the Indians in rebounding with 6.4 per game. Hale Top Free Throw Shooter: True freshman Brett Hale has hit 17-18 free throws for a team leading .944 from the line. He averages 8.9 points per game. Hale had a career high 22 points vs. Vanderbilt. He was the OVC Rookie of the Week on Dec. 10. Johnson Assists: Kenny Johnson, who became eligible at the end of the first semester has 24 assists in just four games played for an average of 6.0 per game. Johnson, who averages 6.3 points per game, had a career high eight assists vs. Lincoln. Hence Has Career High vs. MVSU: Sophomore Damarcus Hence, who missed the first three games this season, scored a career high 15 points in the Mississippi Valley State game. He was 6-12 from the field, 1-3 from three and 2-2 from the line. Hence averages 5.4 points and 1.9 rebounds per game. King Is Instant Offense: Junior Demetrius King has been instant offense off the bench. He averages 9.7 points and 3.2 rebounds per game. King had a career high 17 points and nine rebounds at Vanderbilt. He had 15 points against Southern Illinois. Gordon Returns To Action: Senior Monte Gordon, who was academically ineligible the first semester, saw his first action of the season in the Lincoln game and scored two points in four-minutes of play. He has been slowed by a racing heart that forced him to be hospitalized on Dec. 14 and 15. Gordon averaged 3.2 points and 2.6 rebounds in just 11 games played last season. Crader's Back Is Better: Freshman center Adam Crader missed the SIU game because of a pulled muscle in his back. He is fully recovered and available for the Western Illinois game. Tough Start: This year's 2-8 start is the worst since Southeast started the 1950-51 season 0-9. Smith Will Redshirt: Justin Smith, a transfer from Arkansas State, could have become eligible for the second semester this season, but coach Gary Garner has decided to redshirt Smith. Co-Captains: Juniors Drew DeMond and Tim Scheer are co-captains for the 2001-2002 season. They are both two year letter winners. OVC Honors: 11-26 - Derek Winans, Rookie of the Week 12-3 - Derek Winans, Rookie of the Week 12-10 -- Brett Hale, Rookie of the Week At The Show Me Center: Southeast is 167-53 (.764) in games played at the Show Me Center which opened in 1987. Winning Tradition: Only 42 of the nation's 311 Division I basketball teams won more games over the last three seasons than Southeast Missouri. The Indians had 63 wins over the last three years. SID Streak: Ron Hines, Southeast sports information director has worked 614 consecutive basketball games at Southeast, the longest streak in Division I basketball. He has not missed a game since 1980. Next Game: Southeast will open OVC play at Eastern Illinois on Saturday, Jan. 5 and then return to the Show Me Center for three OVC games, Jan. 7 vs. Tennessee State, Jan. 10 vs. Eastern Kentucky and Jan. 12 vs. Morehead State. |
