Southeast Opens OVC Play Hosting Defending Champion Austin Peay

The Indians had home wins over Wisconsin-Green Bay, Kentucky Christian, UMKC, Oakland City and North Texas. Southeast had a neutral court win over California Santa Barbara and the road win at IPFW. The four losses were on the road at Montana, at Arkansas, at Southern Illinois and at DePaul. Austin Peay, last year's OVC champion and this year's preseason favorite, is 4-7 overall and 1-0 in the OVC after opening conference play with a road win at Jacksonville State last Saturday night. THE COACHES: Gary Garner claimed his 100th victory at Southeast with the road win at IPFW and now stands 100-86 in his 7th season at Southeast and is 347-250 in his 21st year as a collegiate head coach. The 100 wins makes him the third winningest coach in Southeast history. Garner is 5-9 vs. Austin Peay. Dave Loos is 179-180 in his 14th season at Austin Peay and is 261-233 in his 18th season as a collegiate head coach. THE SERIES: Austin Peay leads the Southeast series 16-13 and has won six straight. *** SOUTHEAST NOTES*** WINANS CLOSES ON MILESTONES: Junior guard Derek Winans has started 68 straight games at Southeast and has 994 career points. He needs just six points to become the 18th player in Southeast history to score 1,000 points. This season, Winans is averaging 12.1 points per game, shooting 46% from the field, 46% from three and 85% from the line. In the last four games, the hot shooting Winans has made 22-37 field goals (59%) and 10-18 treys (56%). GRIFFIN HAS TRIPLE DOUBLE: Senior Brandon Griffin recorded a triple double against Oakland City with 12 points, 12 rebounds and 10 assists. Griffin had a double-double at Arkansas with 16 points and 11 rebounds. He leads the team in rebounding with 7.3 per game, in assists with 3.6 per game and in field goal percentage at .549. He ranks third in OVC rebounding, second in assist to turnover ratio and eighth in assists. He needs 6 more rebounds to reach 400 for his career. GONNER NAMED OVC NEWCOMER OF WEEK: For the second time this season, Dainmon Gonner has been named the OVC Newcomer of the week. Gonner had 15 points and 8 rebounds in win over North Texas, a double-double with 14 points and 11 reboudns at DePaul and 18 points and 5 rebounds at IPFW. Gonner leads the team in scoring (14.3 ppg), blocks (5) and steals (19). In the latest OVC stats, he ranks ninth in scoring and eighth in rebounding and steals. HALE DELIVERS IN CLUTCH: Junior guard Brett Hale hit the game winning shot at IPFW with just 0.8 seconds remaining in the game. It was his first game winning shot. For the game, Hale had 15 points on 5-6 from the field, 3-4 from three and 2-2 from the line. Hale averages 8.5 points per game while shooting 44% from the field and 42% from three. He is shooting just 71% from the line after leading the OVC with over 90% from the line last season. NELKE FINDS THE RANGE: Mike Nelke broke out of an early season shooting slump by hitting 5-7 from three vs. Oakland City. He is now shooting 38% from the field and 35% from three. ROBERTS TRANSFERS: Junior point guard Kevin Roberts has left the Southeast team and is now playing for Fontbonne College in St. Louis. Roberts had played in six games this season, averaging 1.2 points and 0.7 rebounds per game. Last season he led the team and OVC in assists and assist/turnover ratio. COPI-RITE PLAYER OF THE GAME: Copi-Rite, Inc. of Cape Girardeau will sponsor a Player of the Game after each Southeast home game. SID STREAK: Ron Hines, sports information director at Southeast Missouri State, has worked 675 consecutive basketball games. He has not missed a game since 1980.
