Memphis Quartet Contributing for Basketball Team Memphis products Hence, Rogers, Sanders and Weaver found way to Southeast.
CAPE GIRARDEAU, MO. (January 10, 2001) - This season, four Memphis natives are contributing for the Southeast Missouri State University men's basketball team, which is in the process of defending its Ohio Valley Conference co-regular season and tournament championships from a season ago. Damarcus Hence, Terry Rogers, Amory Sanders and Daniel Weaver have all made their way from Memphis up I-55 to Cape Girardeau and have helped the Indians to a 9-5 start. Amory Sanders, a 6-1 senior guard from Bartlett High School, is currently ranked second in NCAA Division I statistics in three-point percentage. Sanders is blistering the nets with a 57.7% accuracy, having connected on 30-52 shots this season. Sanders, who spent two years at Three Rivers Community College before coming to Southeast, is averaging 10.4 points and 2.2 rebounds this season in 11 games. He is playing almost 20 minutes a night and has made 78% of his free throws. On the NCAA Tournament squad a season ago, Sanders averaged 5.6 points and led the team in free-throw shooting with a 87% average. Sanders scored a career-high 25 points on 7-10 three-point shooting against Robert Morris on November 25 in the Energia Systems Thanksgiving Tournament in Kansas City. Terry Rogers, a 6-10 junior center from East High School, was named OVC Newcomer of the Week last week for his outstanding performances in road contest against Tennessee State and Austin Peay. In those games, he averaged 10.5 points and 4.5 rebounds per game. He was 6-6 from the field against TSU and 4-5 against APSU in a nationally televised game. On the season, Rogers is averaging 6.7 points and five rebounds per game. He is also leading the team in field goal percentage, shooting 61% from the field. Prior to joining the Indians this season, Rogers spent two years at Mineral Area Community College. Daniel Weaver, a 6-8 sophomore forward from Bartlett High, is in his first year with Southeast since transferring from the University of Memphis. Weaver was provided valuable backup at the four position, has appeared in 10 games and is averaging 3.3 points and 2.2 rebounds per contest. Weaver's seven points and two rebounds were instrumental in a 73-71 victory over intrastate rival Southwest Missouri on December 16. Damarcus Hence, a 6-6 redshirt freshman from Fairly High, has only seen limited action this season after being Redshirted due to leg injuries last season. Hence has appeared in eight contests and is averaging 1.9 points and one rebound per game. He was 4-5 from the field and 1-2 from three-point range in an 81-54 victory over Campbell on December 20. |
