The Indians completed non-conference play with a 77-75 road win at IPFW. The Indians have home wins over Wisconsin-Green Bay, Kentucky Christian, UMKC, Oakland City and North Texas. Southeast had a neutral court win over California-Santa Barbara and the road win at IPFW. The six losses were on the road at Montana, at Arkansas, at Southern Illinois and at DePaul in addition to home losses to Austin Peay and Tennessee Tech. The two conference losses are by a combined six points. Eastern Illinois is 3-9 overall and 1-1 in the OVC with a conference win over Tennessee Tech and a loss to Austin Peay. Tennessee State is 3-10 overall but 2-0 in the OVC with wins over Jacksonville State and Samford. THE COACHES: Gary Garner claimed his 100th victory at Southeast with the road win at IPFW and now stands 100-88 in his 7th season at Southeast and is 347-252 in his 21st year as a collegiate head coach. The 100 wins makes him the third winningest coach in Southeast history. Rick Samuels is 345-332 in his 24th season at EIU. Cy Alexander is 3-10 in his first season at TSU and is 280-212 in his 17th year as a collegiate head coach. THE SERIES: Southeast leads the EIU series 13-12 and leads the Tennessee State series is tied 12-12. LAST SEASON: Southeast lost twice to Eastern Illinois with the Panthers winning 85-73 in Charleston and 85-75 at the Show Me Center. Brett Hale had 29 points in the game at EIU. Southeast beat Tennessee State twice winning 87-61 at the Show Me Center and 89-82 in Nashville when Hale had a career high 31 points. *** SOUTHEAST NOTES*** WINANS TOPS 1,000: Junior guard Derek Winans has started 70 straight games at Southeast and has 1,025 career points. He hit a 3-pointer with 12:48 remaining in the Austin Peay game to go over 1,000 points. He is the 18th player in Southeast history to score 1,000 points. He had 18 points against Tennessee Tech to move into a tie for 16th place on the all-time scoring list. He needs 31 points to move into 15th place. GRIFFIN HAS TRIPLE DOUBLE: Senior Brandon Griffin recorded a triple double against Oakland City with 12 points, 12 rebounds and 10 assists. Griffin had a double-double at Arkansas with 16 points and 11 rebounds. Griffin leads the team in rebounding with 7.2 per game, in assists with 3.4 per game and in field goal percentage at .513. He ranks third in OVC rebounding, second in assist to turnover ratio and eighth in assists. Griffin has 408 career rebounds. GONNER NAMED OVC NEWCOMER OF WEEK: For the second time this season, Dainmon Gonner was named the OVC Newcomer of the Week on Jan. 5. Gonner had 15 points and 8 rebounds in win over North Texas, a double-double with 14 points and 11 rebounds at DePaul and 18 points and 5 rebounds at IPFW. Gonner leads the team in scoring (13.3 ppg), blocks (5) and steals (21). In the latest OVC stats, he ranks ninth in scoring and eighth in rebounding and steals. HALE DELIVERS IN CLUTCH: Junior guard Brett Hale hit the game winning shot at IPFW with just 0.8 seconds remaining in the game. It was his first game winning shot. For the game, Hale had 15 points on 5-6 from the field, 3-4 from three and 2-2 from the line. Hale averages 7.8 points per game while shooting 42% from the field and 41% from three. He is shooting just 71% from the line after leading the OVC with over 91% last season. COPI-RITE PLAYER OF THE GAME: Copi-Rite, Inc. of Cape Girardeau will sponsor a Player of the Game after each Southeast home game. He will be available for autographs and photos from 5 p.m. until 7 p.m. and will present pitcher Tim Alvarez with his All-America award during pre-game ceremonies. AT THE SHOW ME CENTER: Southeast is 5-2 at the Show Me Center this season and 182-67 (.732) since the 7,000 seat facility opened in 1987. SID STREAK: Ron Hines, sports information director at Southeast Missouri State, has worked 677 consecutive basketball games. He has not missed a game since 1980.
