The Teams: Southeast Missouri is 3-16 overall and 1-7 in the OVC at the midpoint in the OVC season. The OVC win was over Eastern Kentucky with losses to Eastern Illinois, Tennessee State, Morehead State, Tennessee-Martin, Murray State, Tennessee Tech and Austin Peay. The Indians are 3-8 at the Show Me Center and 0-8 on the road.

Prior to a Monday night game with Morehead State, Tennessee State is 6-12 overall and 2-5 in the OVC.

League leading Tennessee Tech is 14-4 overall and 5-0 in the OVC. The Golden Eagles, who host Eastern Illinois on Thursday night, have a nine game winning streak.

The Series: Tennessee State leads the series 11-10. Tennessee Tech leads the series 11-10 and has won four straight.

Earlier Games: Tennessee State beat the Indians 94-82 on Jan. 7 at the Show Me Center. The Tigers were led by Olushula Ajanaku with 24 points including 5-8 from three and Kyle Rolston with 21 points including 5-6 from three. Southeast was led by Derek Winans with 25 points and Tim Scheer with 23.

Tennessee Tech beat the Indians 75-62 on Jan. 24 at the Show Me Center. Brent Jolly led the Goldene Eagles with 21 points while Southeast was led by Tim Scheer with 22 and Damarcus Hence with 16.

The Coaches: Gary Garner is 79-57 in his fifth season at Southeast and is 326-220 in his 19th year as a collegiate head coach. Garner is 5-4 vs. Tennessee State and 4-5 vs. Tennessee Tech.

Nolan Richardson III is 16-31 in his second season at TSU. He is 2-1 vs. Southeast.

Jeff Lebo is 62-40 in his fourth season at Tennessee Tech. He is 4-3 vs. Southeast.

DeMond Questionable: Junior center Drew DeMond is questionable for the games at Tennessee State and Tennessee Tech because of a sprained knee and ankle suffered in last Thursday's game with Tennessee Tech. He did not play against Austin Peay on Saturday. All tests have been negative and he is being treated for the sprained knee and ankle.

The Derek Winans Award: Perhaps that should be the new name for the OVC Rookie of the Week Award. For the fourth time this season, Winans was selected as the OVC Rookie of the Week on Jan. 21 after averaging 15.5 points and 6.5 rebounds per game in OVC games at Tennessee-Martin and at Murray State. per game in three OVC contests last week. It was the second straight week, Winans had garnered the award.

Winans was also honored as the OVC Rookie of the Week on Nov. 26, Dec. 3 and Jan. 14.

Winans Leads The Way: Winans leads the Indians in scoring (14.9 ppg), 3-pointers (38), steals (24), minutes played (34.7 pg) and is second in assists (52) and free throw percentage (.820) and third in rebounding (4.5 pg).

Perfect Grades: Winans and Brett Hale both had perfect 4.0 grade point averages for the fall semester. Winans also has a 4.0 cumulative grade point average for his three semesters at Southeast. Men's basketball had a 2.912 GPA in the fall and has a cumulative 2.743.

Scheer Is Consistent: Junior Tim Scheer has scored in double figures in 13 of 19 games this season. He is second on the team in scoring and rebounding with 13.9 points and 5.4 rebounds per game. He is third on the team in 3-point field goal percentage with 27-76 for .355.

Scheer, who had double-doubles against Western Illinois and Lincoln, had a career high 23 points against North Alabama and Tennessee State.

DeMond Has 106 Blocks: Drew DeMond is the active OVC career leader in blocked shots with 105. He had 26 blocks as a freshman, 48 as a sophomore and 32 this season. He had a season-high five blocks vs. Vanderbilt.

DeMond leads the Indians in rebounding with 5.9 per game and is fourth in the OVC in blocked shots with 1.9 per game.

Hale Top Free Throw Shooter: True freshman Brett Hale has hit 33-36 free throws for a team leading .917 from the line. He is short of qualifying for the OVC rankings in free throws (2.0 made per game minimum). The .917 would lead the OVC. Hale averages 7.9 points per game.

Hale had a career high 22 points vs. Vanderbilt. He was the OVC Rookie of the Week on Dec. 10.

Johnson Assists: Kenny Johnson, who became eligible at the end of the first semester, has a team-high 55 assists in just 13 games played for an average of 4.2 per game.

Johnson, who averages 7.9 points per game, had a career high eight assists vs. Lincoln.

Hence Back In Starting Lineup: Sophomore Damarcus Hence returned to the starting lineup for the Murray State game and produced 12 points, three rebounds two assists and two blocks. In the last four games, Henxce has averaged 12.5 points per game.

Crader Gets First Career Start: True freshman Adam Crader got his first career start on Saturday against Austin Peay. Replacing the injured Drew DeMond, Crader had two points and four rebounds in 17-minutes play. He averages 1.1 points and 1.1 rebounds per game.

Gordon Returns To Action: Senior Monte Gordon, who was academically ineligible the first semester, saw his first action of the season in the Lincoln game and has played in every game since. He averages 6.3 points and 3.2 rebounds per game while playing an average of 15.7 minutes per game.

Gordon has been slowed by a racing heart that forced him to be hospitalized on Dec. 14 and 15.

Co-Captains: Juniors Drew DeMond and Tim Scheer are co-captains for the 2001-2002 season. They are both two year letter winners.

At The Show Me Center: Southeast is 168-57 (.748) in games played at the Show Me Center which opened in 1987. Southeast leads the OVC in attendance with an average of 4,072 per game.

Winning Tradition: Only 42 of the nation's 311 Division I basketball teams won more games over the last three seasons than Southeast Missouri. The Indians had 63 wins over the last three years.

It Doesn't Happen Often: The last time Southeast lost 16 games in a season was the 1996-97 team when the Indians were 12-18. The last time a Gary Garner coached team lost 16 games was in 1992-93 when his Fort Hays State team finished 12-16.

Early Signing: Southeast signed one player during the early signing period. Cole Grapperhaus, 6-8 junior from Breese Mater Dei High School in Breese, Ill., signed a national letter of intent to attend Southeast in the fall of 2002.

Grapperhaus averaged 15.0 points and 6.5 rebounds per game last season for the Mater Dei team that was 23-10 and advanced to the Illinois sectional finals.

SID Streak: Ron Hines, Southeast sports information director has worked 623 consecutive basketball games at Southeast, the longest streak in Division I basketball. He has not missed a game since 1980.

Next Game: Following the games at Tennessee State and Tennessee Tech, the Southeast four game road swing continues with games at Morehead State on Feb. 7 and at Eastern Kentucky on Feb. 9.
