Southeast Basketball Notes

Hale is OVC Rookie of the Week: Freshman guard Brett Hale has been selected as the OVC Rookie of the Week after averaging 13 points and 3.5 rebounds per game in two games last week. In games against Tennessee State and Tennessee Tech, Hale shot .526 from the field . and .545 from three. It is the second time this season that Hale has been honored by the OVC. He was also Rookie of the Week on Dec. 10.

Good Free Throw Shooters: Thursday's game with Morehead State will match two of the top six free throw shooting teams in NCAA Division I. In the latest NCAA statistics, Morehead ranked first in the nation with 79% from the line while Southeast ranked sixth with 77% from the line. In the two games since the national report, Southeast shot just .640 and .667 from the line to currently stand at .758.

DeMond Probable: Junior center Drew DeMond is probable for the Morehead State game after missing the Austin Peay, Tennessee State and Tennessee Tech games last week because of a sprained knee and ankle suffered in the Jan. 24 home game with Tech. DeMond had six points and seven rebounds in the earlier game with Tech before he went down late in the first half with the knee and ankle injury

Winans Leads The Way: Winans leads the Indians in scoring (14.6 ppg), 3-pointers (40), steals (30), minutes played (34.5 pg) and is second in assists (60), and third in free throw percentage (.800) and rebounding (4.4 pg). With 292 points scored, he is on course to become the top freshman scorer at Southeast since William "Bud" Eley scored 465 points during the 1995-96 season. Winans was honored as the OVC Rookie of the Week on Nov. 26, Dec. 3, Jan. 14 and Jan. 21.

Hale Top Free Throw Shooter: True freshman Brett Hale has hit 33-36 free throws for a team leading .917 from the line. He is short of qualifying for the OVC rankings in free throws (2.0 made per game minimum) and has not shot a free throw in the last four games. The .917 would lead the OVC. Hale averages 8.2 points per game. Hale had a career high 22 points vs. Vanderbilt.

Johnson Assists: Kenny Johnson, who became eligible at the end of the first semester, has a team-high 59 assists in just 15 games played for an average of 4.2 per game. Johnson, who averages 7.3 points per game, had a career high eight assists vs. Lincoln.
