Redhawks Go On The Road To Face Morehead State and Eastern Kentucky

THE TEAMS: Southeast Missouri is 12-12 overall and 7-7 in the Ohio Valley Conference. The Redhawk ended a six-game losing streak with a 121-116 triple overtime win over league leading Austin Peay last Tuesday night, but lost to Tennessee-Martin on Saturday night. The Redhawks also have OVC home wins over Tennessee State, Tennessee Tech and Eastern Kentucky and road wins over Samford, Jacksonville State and Eastern Illinois. The losses are home losses to Murray State and Morehead State and road losses at Austin Peay, Tennessee State, Tennessee Tech and Murray State.

The Redhawks also have wins over Louisiana Tech, Evansville, Culver-Stockton, Longwood and Central Methodist with losses to nationally ranked Xavier, Coppin State, Tulsa and Illinois State and Bradley from the Missouri Valley Conference. Southeast is 6-3 at the Show Me Center.

Morehead State is 11-10 overall and 9-5 and in third place in the OVC. The Eagles have won nine straight home games.

Eastern Kentucky is 11-10 overall and 8-5 in the OVC prior to a game Thursday vs. Murray State.

THE COACHES: Scott Edgar is 23-32 in his second season as head coach at Southeast after previous head coaching stints at Murray State and Duquesne. His collegiate record is 131-127 in his ninth year as a head coach. Edgar is 10-3 vs. Morehead State and 10-4 vs. Eastern Kentucky.

Donnie Tyndall is 33-28 in his second season at Morehead and is 53-33 in his fourth season as a collegiate head coach.

Jeff Neubauer is 46-38 in his third season at Eastern Kentucky.

THE SERIES: Southeast leads the Morehead State series 16-14. The EKU series is tied at 15.

EARLIER GAMES: Morehead State beat Southeast 82-78 at the Show Me Center on Jan. 24. The Redhawks beat EKU 66-55 on Jan. 2 at the Show Me Center.

**REDHAWKS NOTES**.

HERRING IS OVC NEWCOMER OF THE WEEK: Junior college transfer Jaycen Herring is this week's OVC Newcomer of the Week. Herring averaged 20.5 points, 8.5 rebounds, three assists and two steals per game in the two games last week. He had a career high 29 points and 12 rebounds in recording his first double-double in the 121-116 win over Austin Peay. He is averaging 15.0 points per game during OVC games. He is shooting .515 from the field, .406 from three and .760 from the line. The 6-5 transfer from Palm Beach CC who played his freshman season at Tennessee-Chattanooga, Herring has scored in double figures in 17 of his last 19 games played, and averages 13.6 points and 3.7 rebounds per game.

HOT, HOT, HOT: Junior guard Kenard Moore was 11-16 (.688) from three in the two nationally televised games. In OVC play, Moore is shooting .433 from three. Overall, he averages 8.9 points per game while shooting .404 from three and .813 from the line. He was 7-10 from three and 5-6 from the line while scoring a career high 28 points against Austin Peay.

HARRIS SHINES: Junior Hank Harris had a career high 12 points in the Austin Peay game. He was 2-3 from the field, 2-2 from three and 6-6 from the line. Harris had nine points in the third overtime.

DEPTH IS A KEY: Depth has played a key role for the Redhawks this season. In a stat researched by Chris Forman of the United States Naval Academy, Southeast is one of seven teams in NCAA Division I to have 10 or more players score in double figures this season. Wofford and Southeast have 11 players while Navy, Duquesne, Creighton, Belmont and Lipscomb have 10. The Redhawks who have scored in double figures this season and their game highs include Brandon Foust (25), Will Bogan (23), Rod Pearson (22), Jaycen Herring (29), Jimmy Drew (19), Kenard Moore (28), Calvin Williams (16), Marcus Rhodes (15), David Johnson (12), Mike Rembert (17) and Hank Harris (12).

PEARSON CONSISTENT: Sophomore Rod Pearson is the only Redhawks player to start all 24 games. He is second on the team in scoring with 243 points and leads in assists with 59. Pearson averages 10.1 points and 2.3 assists.

OVC HONORS: Senior Brandon Foust was selected as a co-winner of the OVC Player of the Week honors on Jan. 7 after averaging a double-double in win wins over Eastern Kentucky and Eastern Illinois. He averaged 16.5 points and 11 rebounds per contest and also added 2.0 assists and 1.5 steals per game. Calvin Williams, a transfer from Colorado, was named the OVC Newcomer of the Week for the second time this season after averaging a double-double in two opening OVC wins. Williams averaged 15.5 points and 11 rebounds per game in the wins over Tennessee State and Tennessee Tech.

BENCH CONTRIBUTES: In the road win at Louisiana Tech, 29 of the 59 points came from the bench. In the OVC opening win over Tennessee State the bench scored 61 of the 102 points scored. In the road win at Jacksonville State, the bench scored 49 of 81 points. The bench scored 41 of 66 points in the OVC win over Eastern Kentucky.

IMPRESSIVE START BY BOGAN: True freshman Will Bogan, 6-10, 300, is off to an impressive start with the Redhawks. He had 23 points at Illinois State. Bogan had the game winning tip in with 1.9-seconds remaining in the win at Jacksonville State. He had 17 points against league leading Austin Peay and 18 points against Tennessee-Martin. He is shooting .586 from the field in OVC games and is 1-1 from three. After 21 games played, Bogan averages 7.3 points and 4.0 rebounds per game.

REMBERT ROUNDS INTO FORM: Senior post player Michael Rembert is recovering from two off season knee surgeries, has 38 points and 20 rebounds in the last three games. Rembert, who has started 17 of the last 19 games, is averaging 6.7 points and 4.4 rebounds per game. He had a double-double with 13 points and 10 rebounds at Murray State.

DREW FROM THREE: Long range bomber Jimmy Drew, a sophomore from Anna, Ill., is shooting .403 from three. He was 4-4 from three against Samford including the game winner with one second remaining. He has missed the last three games with a foot injury, but is probable for the Morehead game.

ESPNU BRACKETBUSTER: Southeast will play at Eastern Michigan in an ESPNU BracketBuster game on Saturday, Feb. 23. The tipoff at the Convocation Center on the Eastern Michigan campus will be 3 p.m. (CST).

TWO EARLY SIGNEES: The Redhawks signed two players to National Letters of Intent during the early signing period. Martino Brock, 6-5 guard from Nashville Christian Academy, and Mark Caviness, 6-5 swing player from Indian River Community College in Ft. Pierce, Fla., both signed with Southeast. Brock is averaging 22 points and 7 rebounds per game this season and was recently named MVP of the Martin Luther King Tournament in Memphis. Caviness is averaging 16 points and seven rebounds per game.

AT THE SHOW ME CENTER: Southeast has a record of 212-93 (.697) at the Show Me Center since the facility opened in 1987. The Redhawks are 7-2 at the Show Me Center this season while leading the OVC in home attendance with 3,429 per game.

SID STREAK: Southeast SID Ron Hines has worked 813 consecutive basketball games. He has not missed a game since 1980.

NEXT FOR THE REDHAWKS: Following the games at Morehead State and Eastern Kentucky, the Redhawks will return to the Show Me Center to host Eastern Illinois on Feb. 14, 7:30 p.m.
