Southeast Basketball Hosts Tennessee State

The Teams: Southeast Missouri State is 12-10 overall and 7-4 in the OVC after winning 88-79 at Eastern Illinois on Tuesday night. It was the sixth straight win for the Redhawks who have OVC wins over Austin Peay, Eastern Illinois (2), Jacksonville State, Samford, UT-Martin and Murray State. The losses are to Tennessee Tech twice, Tennessee State and Austin Peay. Seven of the 10 losses have been by four points or less and two of the OVC losses were in overtime.

Tennessee State is 11-14 and 6-5 in the OVC after losing at Eastern Illinois, 82-61 on Thursday night.

The Coaches: Gary Garner is 363-273 in his 22nd year as a collegiate head coach. He is 116-108 in his eighth year at Southeast. Cy Alexander is 18-35 in his second season at TSU and is 295-237 in h is 18th season as a collegiate head coach.
 

 

The Series: Tennessee State leads the series 14-13.

Earlier Game: Tennessee State beat Southeast 105-101 in double-overtime on Jan. 13 in Nashville. Dainmon Gonner led Southeast with a career high 37 points while Derek Winans had 19. Bruce Price led the Tigers with 30.

SOUTHEAST NOTES

WIN STREAK: The Redhawks six-game win streak is the longest since the 1999-2000 season when Southeast won six straight before being beaten by LSU in the first round of the NCAA tournament. The six game streak matches the longest ever at the Division I level. At the Division II level, Southeast won 10 straight during the 1988-89 season, 11 straight in 1989-90 and 20 straight during the 1987-88 season.

THE OVC RACE; With four games remaining in the regular season, Southeast is in a four-way tie for third place in the OVC. The Redhawks are just one game out of first place. Samford and Tennessee Tech lead the league with 8-3 records while Southeast, Murray State, Eastern Kentucky and Austin Peay are all 7-4. The top four teams will get a home game in the OVC tournament.

DYNAMIC DUO: Dainmon Gonner leads the OVC in scoring (20.5) and steals (2.9) while Reggie Golson leads the league in rebounding (9.0) and blocks (2.5). Gonner and Golson were teammates at Hutchinson CC.

GONNER LEADS OVC SCORING: Senior Dainmon Gonner, selected as the OVC Player of the Week on Jan. 21 after averaging 30 points and 8.5 rebounds per game in two OVC games, continues to lead the OVC in scoring with 20.5 points per game which ranks him 16th nationally.

Gonner had a career high 37 points and a career high 12 rebounds in the double-overtime loss at Tennessee State. The 37 points topped an earlier 36 point effort at Bradley.

Gonner also leads Southeast and the OVC in steals with 2.9 per game which ranks him 10th nationally.

GOLSON LEADS REBOUNDERS: Senior Reggie Golson leads the team and OVC in rebounding with 9.0 per game and blocks with 4.5 per game. Golson leads the team in field goal percentage with .543, third best in the OVC.

Golson was named the OVC Player of the Week on Dec. 13 after averaging 15 points and 10.5 rebounds per game. He had a career high 14 rebounds vs. Montana.

Golson is 28th nationally in blocked shots, 39th nationally in rebounding and 50th nationally in field goal percentage.

PARADOSKI LEADS OVC IN ASSIST/TO RATIO: Freshman Paul Paradoski currently leads the OVC in assist/turnover ratio at 2.26. He was the Ohio Valley Conference Freshman of the Week on Nov. 30 after recording a double-double in his first collegiate start against Rockhurst. Paradoski had 10 points and 11 rebounds.

WINANS HONORED PREGAME: Southeast senior Derek Winans will be honored by Shawnee High School during pregame ceremonies. Shawnee athletic director and former basketball coach Mike Hanson will present Winans his high school jersey. Winans is the first basketball player from Shawnee to play Division I basketball. He is Shawnee High School's all-time leading scoerer with 2,035 points and ranks as the fifth leading scorer in Southeast history. He was Valedictorian of his senior class and is the first ever CoSIDA Academic All-American at Southeast.

WINANS GOES OVER 1,400 POINTS: Winans has moved up to fifth on the all-time career scoring list at Southeast. He has 1,433 points to rank as the second leading active career scoring leader in the OVC.

Winans did not start practice until Monday, Nov. 29, because of a stress fracture in his leg. He gradually worked his way back into playing shape. He got his first start of the season on Jan. 8 at Tennessee Tech.

In addition to being second in active career scoring in the OVC, Winans leads the active career leaders in 3-pointers made with 212, ranks second in steals with 141, third in assists with 267 and 10th in rebounding with 254.

Winans streak of having started 84 consecutive games ended at Bradley. He has been Southeast's top scorer for each of the last three seasons and is the school's first ever basketball Academic All-American.

WILLOUGHBY GETS HOT: Terrick Willoughby scored a career-high 25 points in the win over Jacksonville State and came back with 14 points against Samford, 17 points at UT-Martin, a team-high 19 points at Murray State and 17 at Eastern Illinois.

In OVC games only, Willoughby averages 12.6 points and 3.1 rebounds per game. He shoots .476 from the field, .426 from three and .808 from the line.

Willoughby is second in the OVC in 3-point field goal percentage with 36-78 for .462.

BELCHER PROVIDES SPARK: Ryan "Fuzzy" Belcher continues to provide a spark off the bench. He had nine points vs. Jacksonville State and 11 vs. Samford. Belcher is 6-11 from three in the last five games. For the season, Belcher is shooting .576 from the field, .435 from three and .762 from the line.

HALE LOST FOR SEASON: Senior Brett Hale, the top 3-point shooter in the OVC, is out for the season with a fractured wrist. He suffered during practice at Tennessee Tech on Jan. 7.

At the time of his injury, he led the OVC in 3-point field goal percentage with 22-40 for .550. He shot .506 from the field and .875 from the free throw line.

Hale needed 50 more points to become the 19th player in Southeast history to score 1,000 career points. He ended his career with 950 career points.

INJURIES: James White is out for the season with a knee injury while Brett Hale is out for the season with a fractured right wrist.

Ketshner Guerrier, who has missed 14 games with a knee injury suffered in shoot around prior to the South Dakota State game, is now available for action.

Mike Nelke is playing with a small fracture in his left wrist.

BUZZER BEATER: Mike Nelke's off balance 3-pointer at the buzzer provided Southeast with a 59-58 win over South Dakota State. Nelke, who was hampered with a bad wrist, was 0-8 from the field prior to his game winning shot.

SID STREAK: Ron Hines, Southeast Sports Information Director has worked 717 consecutive basketball games. He has not missed a game since 1980.

THE REDHAWKS ARE BORN: All athletic teams at Southeast became Redhawks Saturday, Jan. 22, when the new Redhawks mascot was introduced prior to the Austin Peay game. Southeast is 6-0 as Redhawks.

EARLY SIGNING: Southeast has signed 6-7 Tyrell Curry of State Fair Community College to a national letter of intent. Curry played at Cincinnati State Community College last season where he averaged 11 points and nine rebounds per game. He is originally from Tacoma, Wash.

NEXT: The Redhawks go on the road for games at Eastern Kentucky on Thursday night and at Morehead State on Saturday night.
