Indian Hoops Squad Looks to Secure OVC Tournament Berth Southeast to face Eastern Illinois on Fox Sports South game, Tuesday at 7:00 p.m.

Eastern Illinois (14-13, 6-7 OVC) OVC Tournament Seeds at Stake: Southeast Missouri is 5-20 overall and 3-11 in the OVC and tied for eighth place and the final tournament spot with Eastern Kentucky. Eastern Illinois is 14-13 overall and 6-7 in the OVC. The Panthers still have a chance to host a first round tournament game. The Series: Southeast leads the series 12-10. Earlier Game: Southeast led the Panthers 61-43 with 10:02 remaining on Jan. 5 at EIU, but the Panthers rallied for an 84-74 win. The Panthers tied the game 74-74 with 1:34 remaining and took the lead for good at 76-74 with 1:12 remaining. Henry Domercant led the Panthers in scoring with 38 points while Drew DeMond had 18 points for Southeast. Derek Winans had a career low four points. The Coaches: Gary Garner is 81-61 in his fifth season at Southeast and is 328-24 in his 19th year as a collegiate head coach. Garner is 7-3 vs. Eastern Illinois. Rick Samuels is 327-305 in his 22nd season at Eastern Illinois. Television: The Eastern Illinois game will be televised live by Fox Sports Net South which goes into over 11-million homes in the southern United States. Dave Weekley of Charleston, West Virginia will call the play-by-play with Greg Turner of Nashville, Tenn. providing commentary. This will be the second Fox Sports Net South telecast at the Show Me Center this season. The Austin Peay game was televised on Jan. 26. OVC Tournament: Southeast controls its own destiny in the quest for the final playoff spot in the OVC Tournament. The Indians are currently tied with Eastern Kentucky for eighth place but hold two wins over EKU this season to win the tie breaker should the teams tie for the final tournament spot A Southeast win over Eastern Illinois and an EKU loss to Murray State would clinch the final spot for the Indians. The eighth seed will open tournament play at Tennessee Tech. The remaining games for Southeast and EKU follow.
EKU (3-10) Southeast (3-10) 2-21 - EKU @ Murray 2-19 - EIU @ SE 2-23 - EKU @ UTM 2-23 - SE @ AP Southeast 9th Nationally in FT%: The Indians are shooting .756 from the free throw line to rank 9th nationally in the latest NCAA Division I rankings. The Indians are second in the OVC behind Morehead State, the number one free throw shooting team in the nation. Indians 2nd in OVC 3-Point %: A steady improvement has moved Southeast into second place in OVC 3-point field goal percentage. The Indians are 165-467 for .353. Eastern Illinois is third at .349. Southeast ranks fourth in field goal percentage with .459. Winans Is OVC Rookie of Week: Derek Winans has been selected as the OVC Rookie of the Week for the fifth time this season. Winans averaged 16 points, six rebounds, 4.5 assists and 2.5 steals per game in the two games last week. He shot .522 from the field and .555 from three. Winans is averaging 7.5 rebounds per game over the last four games and is now the Indians' rebounding leader in OVC games with an average of 5.5 per game. He had a career high 12 rebounds at Eastern Kentucky. Winans leads the Indians in scoring (14.5 ppg), 3-pointers (47), steals (36), assists (72), minutes played (34.7) and is third in free throw percentage (.776) and rebounding (4.8 pg). With 349 points scored, he is on course to become the top freshman scorer at Southeast since William "Bud" Eley scored 465 points during the 1995-96 season. In OVC statistics, Winans is ranked in eight different statiscal categories. Winans is 9th in scoring, 13th in free throw percentage, 20th in rebounding, 8th in assists, 10th in steals, 12th in 3-point field goal percentage, 9th in defensive rebounds, and 5th in assist/turnover ratio. Winans was honored as the OVC Rookie of the Week on Nov. 26, Dec. 3, Jan. 14 and Jan. 21. Scheer Is Consistent: Junior Tim Scheer has scored in double figures in 18 of 25 games this season. He is second on the team in scoring, rebounding and 3-point percentage. Scheer averages 14.1 points and 5.1 rebounds per game with 35-94 for .372 from three. He leads the team in scoring in OVC games with 14.5 points per game Scheer's .836 from the line is fourth best in the OVC. Scheer, who had double-doubles against Western Illinois and Lincoln, had a career high 23 points against North Alabama and Tennessee State. Hale is Hot: Freshman guard Brett Hale has been lighting it up from the field. In the last six games, Hale is 33-65 from the field for .508 and is 14-29 from three for .483. He is also 6-7 (.857) from the line. His hot shooting has raised his seasonal percentages to .436 from the field, .357 from three and .907 from the line. He averages 9.1 points per game. Hale has hit 39-43 free throws for a team leading .907 from the line. He is short of qualifying for the OVC rankings in free throws (2.0 made per game minimum). Hale was selected as OVC Rookie of the Week on 12-10, 2-4 and 2-11. DeMond Is Back: Junior center Drew DeMond, who missed three games with a knee and ankle sprain, bounced back with big games off the bench at Morehead State and Eastern Kentucky. In the two road games, DeMond was 8-13 (.615) from the field and 10-12 (.833) from the line. He averaged 13 points and 4.5 rebounds per game in the two games. For the season, DeMond averages 10.6 points and a team-high 5.7 rebounds and 1.7 blocks per game. DeMond Has 109 Blocks: Drew DeMond is the active OVC career leader in blocked shots with 109. He had 26 blocks as a freshman, 48 as a sophomore and 35 this season. He had a season-high five blocks vs. Vanderbilt. DeMond is 4th in OVC blocks with 1.7 per game. Johnson Assists: Kenny Johnson, who became eligible at the end of the first semester, has a team-high 69 assists in 18 games played for an average of 4.1 per game. Johnson, who averages 6.4 points per game, had a career high eight assists vs. Lincoln. Johnson did not play in the UTM game because of a bout with the flu and played only briefly in the Murray State game. Hence Back In Starting Lineup: Sophomore Damarcus Hence returned to the starting lineup for the first Murray State game and produced 12 points, three rebounds two assists and two blocks. For the season, Hence averages 6.5 points and 1.5 rebounds per game. King Adds Spark Off The Bench: Demetrius king has been instant offense off the bench. In Thursday's win over Tennessee-Martin, he came off the bench to score 11 points and pull down six rebounds. He was 5-6 from the field and 1-1 from three. He also had two assists and one steal. Against Murray State, King was 2-2 from the field, 1-1 from three and 5-8 from the line for 10 points. King's last two game totals show 7-8 from the field (.875), 2-2 from three (1.000) and 5-9 from the line (.556). Gordon Returns To Action: Senior Monte Gordon, who was academically ineligible the first semester, saw his first action of the season in the Lincoln game and has played in all but one game since. He averages 7.3 points and 2.7 rebounds per game while shooting .638 from the field. In the last six games, Gordon is 16-23 (.696) from the field and 19-28 (.679) from the line. Gordon got his first start at Tennessee Tech and responded with 15 points, five rebounds and two steals. He has started the last five games. Perfect Grades: Winans and Hale both had perfect 4.0 grade point averages for the fall semester. Winans also has a 4.0 cumulative grade point average for his three semesters at Southeast. Men's basketball had a 2.912 GPA in the fall and has a cumulative 2.743.
OVC Honors:
11-26 - Derek Winans, Rookie of the Week At The Show Me Center: Southeast is 169-59 (.741) in games played at the Show Me Center which opened in 1987. Southeast, which has led the OVC in attendance for nine of 10 years in the league, again leads the OVC in attendance with an average of 4,126 per game.
The 21 losses by the 1975-76 team is the school record for losses in a season.
Next Game: The Indians close the regular season at Austin Peay on Saturday, Feb. 23, 7:30 p.m.
If the Indians qualify for the OVC post-season tournament they will play at Tennessee Tech on Tuesday, Feb. 26, 7:30 p.m.
