The Indians have wins over Central Methodist, Wisconsin-Milwaukee, Oakland City, Missouri-Kansas City, Southwest Missouri, Eastern Kentucky, Murray State, Tennessee State, Tennessee Tech and Western Illinois. The losses have been to Arkansas State, Indiana State, Tulane, Southern Illinois, Arkansas-Little Rock, Creighton, Eastern Illinois (2), Morehead State (2), Tennessee-Martin (2), Western Illinois, Austin Peay (2), Eastern Kentucky and Murray State. Tennessee Tech is 9-5 and in third place in the OVC. The Golden Eagles are 16-11 overall. Prior to a Monday night game at Murray State and a home game vs. Eastern Illinois on Thursday night, Tennessee State is 0-13 in the OVC and 2-22 overall. THE COACHES: Gary Garner is 92-80 in his sixth season at Southeast and is 339-244 in his 20th season as a collegiate head coach. Mike Sutton is 16-11 in his first season at Tennessee Tech while Hosea Lewis is 0-** in his first year as interim coach at TSU. THE SERIES: Tennessee Tech leads Southeast 13-11 in the all-time series. Tennessee State leads the series 12-11. EARLIER GAMES: Southeast upset Tennessee Tech 75-71 at the Show Me Center on Feb. 1. Derek Winans and Brett Hale led Southeast with 23 and 20 points. Cameron Crisp, cousin of former Southeast player Reggie Crisp (1995-97), led Tech with 16 points. Southeast built up a 55-25 halftime lead and coasted to an 87-67 win over Tennessee State on Jan. 30 at the Show Me Center. Tim Scheer had a career high 32 points for Southeast while Brandon Lockridge led TSU with 11 points. SOUTHEAST NOTES Playoff Possibilities: Southeast will play at either Morehead State or Austin Peay in the opening round of the OVC post-season tournament on Tuesday, March 4. If Southeast finishes seventh, they play the number two seed. If they tie with Eastern Kentucky, Southeast wins the tie breaker and plays the number two seed. Southeast in OVC Stats: Southeast leads the league in assists (18.19) and assist/turnover ratio (1.31). Individual OVC leaders include Brandon Griffin in offensive rebounds (3.8) and Kevin Roberts in assists with 6.3 per game and assist to turnover ratio (3.10). Scheer Suffers Knee Injury: Senior Tim Scheer suffered a knee injury in the Murray State game. An MRI revealed a partially torn knee ligament that will sideline him indefinitely. After 88 games at Southeast, he has 895 career points and 304 career rebounds.. This season, Scheer is the Indians' second leading scorer with 13.1 points per game. Roberts Assists: Sophomore Kevin Roberts leads the OVC in assists and assist/turnover ratio. He is ranked 16th nationally in NCAA Division I. Roberts averages 6.3 assists per game with an assist/turnover ratio of 3.1. His 13 assists vs. Morehead State tied the Southeast record for assists in a game. His 163 assists already this season ranks as the second highest single season total in Southeast history. Dwayne Rutherford had 200 assists during the 1988-89 season. Roberts has 205 career assists and needs just 21 more assists to move into the 10th spot on the all-time assist chart at Southeast. Griffin Closes In on Rebound Record: Junior college transfer Brandon Griffin already has the third highest seasonal rebound total in Southeast school history and he is closing in on the record 310 rebounds accomplished twice by William "Bud" Eley. With a minimum of three games remaining, Griffin, who averages 10.5 rebounds per game has 283 rebounds. He has been selected as the OVC Newcomer of the Week four times this season and leads the league in offensive rebounds with 3.8 per game and is second in total rebounds with 10.5 per game. He ranks 12th nationally in rebounding. Griffin has 12 double-doubles this season. Griffin, who is averaging a double-double with 12.1 points and 10.5 rebounds per game, has 12 double-doubles this season . Griffin was the leading rebounder in the University Hoops Classic and was named to the all-tournament team. He had 33 rebounds in the three tournament games. Against nationally ranked Creighton, Griffin had 9 points, 9 assists and 13 rebounds. He has double figure rebounding in 18 of 27 games played. Hale Tops OVC Free Throw Shooters: Sophomore guard Brett is 54-58 from the free throw line this season for .931, tops in the OVC. He does not have enough attempts to qualify for the NCAA stats which require 2.5 made free throws per games played. He made 22 straight free throws at one point in the season. In his two seasons at Southeast, Hale is 90-98 from the line for a career percentage of .918. Winans Ranked in Five OVC Stat Categories: Derek Winans, last season's OVC Freshman of the Year, is ranked in the OVC's top 10 in five different statistical categories. In the latest OVC stats, Winans ranks fifth in assist/turnover ratio (1.7), 10th in scoring (15.1), seventh in assists (3.8), third in 3-point field goal percentage (.413), and sixth in 3-point field goals made(2.38). Winans leads the team in scoring with 15.1 points per game and steals with 37. He is second in assists with 3.8 per game. He had a double-double vs. SMS with career high 10 assists and 17 points. Winans had a career high 33 points in the loss at Western Illinois. He was 14-19 from the floor and 5-9 from three. A 4.0 student, Winans is a two-time OVC Medal of Honor winner. Hence Bounces Back: Junior Damarcus Hence who has been slowed by injuries and illness, has rebounded to average 13 points per game over the last three games. In the three games he is 18-35 (.514) from the field. Hence scored a career high 25 points at UMKC. He currently averages 10.3 points and 4.0 rebounds per game. Hence is the second leading rebounder for the Indians. King Suffers Knee Injury: Demetrius King, was leading the OVC in 3-point field goal percentage (.483) when he suffered a knee injury in the Morehead State game on Jan. 11. He was forced to miss the Tennessee-Martin and Murray State games. On the season he is shooting .370 from three while averaging 4.9 points and 2.4 rebounds per game. Grapperhaus Contributes: True freshman Cole Grapperhaus had a career high six points and seven rebounds vs. Tennessee State. He scored five key points in just three-minutes played in the win over Murray State He was 2-2 from the field and 1-1 from the line.. On the season, Grapperhaus has played in 20 games averaging 1.7 points and 1.3 rebounds per game. Crader Sidelined With Bad Back: Sophomore Adam Crader, 6-11, who came off the bench to score a career high seven points at Morehead State, is back to full strength after back spasms that forced him to miss the six games. Crader averages 1.7 points and 1.8 rebounds per game. Golson Will Seek Medical Redshirt: Junior college transfer Reggie Golson, 6-7, 215, will seek a medical redshirt after appearing in only one game this season. He saw his first and only playing time in the win over Oakland City. He scored 10 points and pulled down eight rebounds in just 14-minutes playing time. Golson, who has been recovering from minor knee surgery in September, has not played since that game and will seek a medical redshirt that will leave him with two years of eligibility remaining . Help Is Here: Golson is one of three players sitting out this season. His junior college teammate Dainmon Gonner (6-6, 245) joined the team at the semester and Mike Nelke is a point guard who transferred from Valparaiso. All three players practice with the team. This season, the Indians were 7-6 at the SMC. SID Streak: Southeast SID Ron Hines has worked 661 consecutive basketball games at Southeast. The streak is the longest in Division I basketball. Hines has not missed a game since 1980. |
